How do you remove the ignition coil out of an EL Fairmont? I can reach under the front of the intake manifold and can feel it but my view is obstructed by the intake manifold.. I can feel 1 bolt towards the top and there seem to be two screws on the side of the ignition coil. I have partially disassembled the airbox to get more clearance in reaching under the intake manifold. I do not have vehicle jack stands and so have to work from the top. Do i have to disassemble the whole manifold to get to the coil? Is there anyway i can get this ignition coil out of the car and replaced without paying big $$ (quoted at $180 all up by mobile mechanic). Any help would be appreciated..

I do it from underneeth. its VERY VERY hard to do it from above. Does that $180 include the coil? If so it may just be worth is to bypass the CBF factor.

Think your going to have to go from under the car. It would be cheaper to buy some jacks than pay someone to fix it. Or drive 2 wheels up on the kerb and climb under

yeh the quote for $180 includes the coil.. It will be almost impossible to move the car up on a kerb and work from underneath, as it is stuck on the front lawn and won't move (won't start >.<). However, i am able to get under the car without raising it, but my view of the coil is obstructed by various cables/pipes and the intake manifold casts a shadow on everything underneath. Maybe $180 is worth it...

ok thanx all for the info.. i was wondering which bolt/screw to undo on the coil. From feeling the unit but not being able to see it, there is 1 bolt above it that goes into the engine block and there are 2 screws on the lower part or the side of the unit. Do i have to remove the bolt and the screws or just the bolt?

I found it quite easy to get to from above...just remove the airbox...there are 2 bolts that hold it on from memory...

undo the 2 bolts that hold it to the block, remove wires, can undo the 2 srews on the side after its out... and yes best tackled from underneath the car....

so you can move the car
unplug the old coil then plug in the new one (let it hang there) start and drive the car up onto stands remove old coil and bolt up new coil. you will cut you hands doing the coil from the top and it will take a long time.. takes 5 minutes from under the car.

$80-$90 for a coil... you were ripped! Original Bosch cost me $50. From underneath it will take around 20min to replace, for those people that can do it from above you must have arms and hands of a 10 year old! The bolts are 10mm and a small ratchet with a short extension does the trick.

i suspect that my coil is on it way out. Its runs rough and then stalls. Possible coil problem?
