Hi guys

Ok I know there's a lot of threads on these, but i've been sifting thru them and haven't found an answer to my question.

Has anyone tried cutting the dash and fitting an aftermarket head unit in this location?

Image

Obviously I'd have to remove the stacker and the wiring for those buttons, but it looks like the right size for an aftermarket job and would certainly look tidier than in the bottom where the gearstick will interfere.

So chime in with your thoughts on the possible success of this idea

has been tried on aff but the main problem is that the cd player/ ac controls are on two boards connected via a small ribbon cable... iv seen one when the small a/c screen was moved down to the tissue box position... ill find the thread for you... just at work nothing better to do lol

Very nice find on that thread

BUT: I'm looking to just install a single din head unit, no messing with the screen/AC. That thread shows double din installs, and most of them are removing the screen and repositioning it somewhere else.

I've seen options about getting a carputer setup with centrafuse software (http://www.centrafuse.com), but i don't really want to waste the expensive Alpine head unit i've got collecting dust.

Surely I'm not the first person that wants to try this?

i was pretty much just showing that there is the board behind that section that it required to connect the screen to the ac controls, so unless you move the board it wont be possible

You can get a din panel to fit an aftermarket unit in where the cigarette lighter is.

Seen those, don't like the look of them. And a manual gear lever is gonna be a problem when inserting cds.

I'm more than happy to move the board from behind to sit somewhere else, but I suppose I need to think of a use for the screen after this since my head unit isn't a dvd player. Carputer idea is wonderful, but also has a hefty price tag to it.

The gear stick doesn't get in the way.

Just a quick pic of how it looks, still need to adjust it properly to fit in (slightly off on to one side)

I'm still trying to decide which way to go... If i can i'd like to keep the screen and steering wheel controls functional, so I'm not sure.

That bottom fascia looks better than i thought it would, but still... I'd rather have my controls in a better place. Basically I think i need to pull the dash apart and have a stickybeek before i know which way I'll do things.

I don't mind having it down there, the only problem is glare.

Ok so I've decided to go with the single DIN install in the tissue box bracket. CBF doing anything more intense until i've got the funds to go with a full carputer.

I will be documenting how i'm doing it so hopefully people won't have to search the internet for 4 hours like i've had to in order to find some god damn wiring diagrams.

Watch this space...
