Hey all
just have a quick question,
i think my oil pressure sensor has shat itself, i start the car it goes to 4 bar and then drops down to 0 when it warms up
its an NL ford fairlane,
i dont have a mechanical gauge to test with, are their any other common faults to happen within the block to cause low pressure,
when the gauge is at 0 it still seems to oil fine

very common.
1: Never trust an electrical gauge or a ford one!
2: Clean the contacts on the single wire on the sender.
3: Make sure your engine earth is in good order.
4: Replace it after all its 10yrs old.

Ok, in a fair few cases, its the cluster not the sender, theres only one way to test it correctly, and thats a mechanical as you already know.

Your could have worn mains, leaking lifters etc etc, but these motors are pretty bullet proof!

If you still remain to have low pressure, replace consumables like oil and filter, it may not make a difference, but hell, its a $30 and may assist!

i done a complete oil and water change 2 weeks back, i drove in a 40 degree day on the highway, temp got up to the O in normal and then the pressure just dropped like a stick,
and the car was made 96 - 97, bout time something failed
car only has 190,000 on the clock, id hate to think its dying already.
how much are new sensors worth ? average

I bought one recently and it was $57 brand new. You need a deep socket wrench (1-1/16th inch) that can swallow the whole sensor to be able to undo the old and install the new. Mine did a complete reverse, showing too high oil pressure instead of low. When i replaced the sensor it sits in the middle when hot and about 3 quarter when cold.

mmm its all a mystery, checked it with a mechanical gauge today, it was all ok, the gauge still works but its just a cuppla bar out, i picked up one today from motor traders for 42$
still to put it in and test, could be a fault in the wire somewhere,
anyway cheers for all the replies

any idea's
oil pump busted and oil pressure relieve valve ??
or somethin more serious,
no knock that i can hear (premature firing)
timing is good, fuel is ok, fuel filter was changed 3,000k ago

Jebus @ the above comment!!

Mine has been doing the same thing, ie. oil pressure sitting on 1/2 to 2/3, jumping up to the max reading for a few seconds (time varies...) before dropping back down to normal pressure.

Now, where is the oil pressure sensor located in an EL XR8??? I may be having the same problem, as my recent thread states.

on the front of the block under the power steering pump sorta

i changed sensors but that wasnt my problem
i cleaned out the dizzy cap from carbon n that seems to have worked things out rev wise
pulled the sump off and changed pumps and all seems to be ok for now

need to finish the 393 quicker i spose

How long is a peice of string :P
hahaha
nah not much longer to go,
was playing around with her today, doing some clearance checks, front counter weight collects oil gallery wall for the oil pump, nothin alittle shaving can fix. rods clear the skirts by about 10mm or more, dont know if i should shave alittle off for extra clearance

other than that, just small things need to come in
Trick Flow Intake
need injectors
pushrods, need to measure up for some
still deciding on the ECU and then the Auto needs to be looked at

hopefully not too far away
