As most XF/XG/XH ute owners may appreciate, those std 4" speakers just don't cut it, no matter how good a brand, they just don't compare with the bigger speakers.
There have been threads on adding subs, etc to the behind seat panel, but I wanted to mod the doors - AFAIK, I haven't seen anyone do it.

Not really that hard - remove the old plastic speaker bracket, mark the speaker position, cut your hole (be careful), I used E series wagon tailgate brackets, which were pop rivetted to the doors (keep the foam splash guards too) they did need the speaker holes enlarged to fit the speakers, drill the speaker holes, fit the speaker. There's enough clearance to the lowered window glass.
The door trim needs to be cut and the grill fitted (hence the parcel shelf carpet to cover any imperfections, etc).
I did use brushcote sound deadener inside the door and on the outer skin - does make a fair difference on road noise, and improves the speaker bass considerably - even the doors sound like doors when they're closed - not like tin cans anymore.

Once again snap...nice work! 8-)
When I first read the title I was gunna post something along the lines of 6" speakers are hard to fit to the doors. I have trouble (I didn't fit the speakers, the previous owner did) with the window winders hitting the speaker grills; a problem you have solved

Thanks dude. I wouldn't think going back to manual winders would be a prob on mine as the grille is sitting in the recess.
The grilles are mounted too far proud of the door in yours ??

Don't suppose you know how much they cost from Ford? I take it they are the switches for the rear doors, as they appear to have a shroud built in.

Yeah the grilles are a bit proud. One day I will replace the entire door trim and mount them properly 8-)

That's correct - I wouldn't bother with ford, they'll cost big $$$. IIRC I've got a couple spare. Wouldn't EB/D ones suit yours better??, IIRC you put powereds in your EB.

No, EB was always manual, its the EF i'm almost finished with in the powered conversion. Do you have a pic of both types close up?

Sorry no photos of EB type - should be able to find them on here though in the galleries. EF/EL ones: http://www.fordmods.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=34631

Yeah, you can keep the original trims.
Best way to measure the window to skin depth is to pull the door trim, wind the window down, remove the original speaker, and use a ruler through the cavity.
