I have am El falcon wagon 5.0 litre
The steering has got some freeplay in the universal joint. I tried to buy a new part from Ford but they say part no longer available. Has anyone got any ideas. Thanks Reg |

Yep, most e-series parts are no longer available from ford.
Try calling either your local Bursons or maybe a suspension place and ask them. Im sure a suspension joint would be able to get them in for you. Cheers Sam

How's the upper uni at the base of the steering column ???
I doubt you will be able to find those uni joints new from anywhere - if you do, let us all know. Otherwise, you can make a serviceable intermediate shaft from 2 second hand units - you need to destroy one to get the uni joint parts you need to rebuild another. Use HTB grease to lube the needle rollers. Takes an afternoon or a bit longer to do. Otherwise, your other option (which is what you'll most likely do) is to get another without any play from a wreckers. Has to be another EL one too.

The joint is crimped into place in three places, I have used a blunt center punch to "recrimp" the joint which removes the movement nicely. Dodgy - yesm but as you have found they are not available new and hard if not imposible to find one second hand without play.

The uni spider does have flexible plastic inserts at the ends that bear up against those crimped caps.

If I remember correctly, Papa Smurf said his dealership still had a couple in stock.
Not cheap though :S |

Thanks for the ideas.
I nearly got a universal joint new but the company got taken over and dont make them any more. I may have a lead on a second hand one but hes asking if I have a fine spline or a corse spline. There must be two different types as well. Only way to tell apparently is to take it off, it will be next week before I can do that. Thanks Reg |

He's a user on here... Just look him up.
There is a thread called "Ask Papa Smurf" on here somewhere where he mentions the part number and what he has in regards to the intermediate shaft. |

Matey, we have 2 EL 6cyl ones left in stock even though they are obsolete.
Would be looking at around $250.00 I think. |

EL is a*** spline (steering rack pinion end), they're also shorter than the earlier E series ones, most likely to make them interchangeable between the EL SSPS and non SSPS steering racks.Be a trailblazer, rebuild one .

Thank you Papa Smurf
I'm afraid mine is the V8 one. Thanks also to Snap0964 I think you are saying it is a c_o_r_s_e spline. (mispelt on purpose) It put asterixs in your reply - I think its some kind of automatic thingy trying to block particular words? Thanks Reg |

Pretty sure someone mentioned the only difference between the I6 ande V8 ones are the V8 ones have a head shield wrapped around shaft.
The heat shield probably add's $100 to the cost of the V8 one. So just be a matter of getting and I6 one and swapping the wrapping from one to the other. |

Yeah, the filter can be turned off/on in your prefs.arm79 wrote: Pretty sure someone mentioned the only difference between the I6 ande V8 ones are the V8 ones have a head shield wrapped around shaft. If that's that bell shaped shield, the I6's have them too. They tap off very easily, they're not even spot welded on.
