I am picking up my T5 manual conversion this week and before I pay for it I need to confirm that it is from an EF. Is there any external difference? Otherwise can anyone tell me the first gear ratio between input and output shaft for both EA and EF so I can test it.
Also is there anyway of telling its condition prior to installing it other than a dismantle?

the only way that i know is the numbers, i dont know whats what tho, i have a T5 here but i was told that its an EL one but possibly could be from an EA (as with the installer anything is possible)
and playing with the gear shifter before you buy is a good idea, put it in gear and move it around, a nice smooth firm select shows a good box, if it clunks and the stick moves alot in gear the box requires attention |

Otherwise can anyone tell me the first gear ratio between input and output shaft for both EA and EF so I can test it. Mark the input and output shafts with whiteout, select 1st gear. Turn the output shaft one complete turn. You'll most likely find the input shaft will turn 3¼ turns (EBII onwards) or 3½ turns (XF,EA,EBI). Another way to tell the EBII onwards boxes apart from the earlier boxes is to look for a 'roofing nail type head' sitting rearwards and down from the reverse switch (LHS of gearcase). This is the mounting point for the reverse inhibitor spring - the gearcase is drilled and tapped to accomodate this, the earlier boxes have a long coil spring to achieve same. {USERNAME} wrote: Also is there anyway of telling its condition prior to installing it other than a dismantle? Dismantling is the best method, finding chipped/broken gears later by their noise when running is not good - I'm glad I did mine as I did find a couple of things which were easily fixed. Most shop manuals have a reasonable write up, only downside is you need the tools to do it, DTI, press, circlip pliers. It's really not that hard IMO.

Thats the info I need SNAP. I take it there arn't any part numbers on the side of the box. Do you have a picture of the "roofing nail" section?

Do you have a picture of the "roofing nail" section? Nah, no pic. Check out the EL Gregory's (#270) page 144. Or try any shop manual with info on the later boxes. There is usually an aluminium tag on the top right bolt of the extn housing, has a 9xDA ford part no - don't rely on it though.

http://www.fordmods.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=37604, and most likely because of perception. For normal driving, they'll do the job just like a later T5.

Got the box today and it does have the Roofing nail section confirming his store that its from an low K EF. It looks like it has spent most of its life in the shed as its covered in dust and paint overspray.
