The wiring loom for the rear console light is not in the XT or XR (not sure about GT).
I was going to do the same.
The hole is there but that is it.

I bought the lens from ford, bought a cheap festoon lamp kit from supercheap auto, a bit of cutting and some wire and I have a very very bright LED console light. I now have a 6chip High Intensity White 41mm festoon LED in there now, looks very nice and took about 1hr at max from start to finish.

I installed mine over the weekend in Spark Blue, pretty happy with the results.

WOW that mod is awesome! I hope the XT's have it too. I've got footwell and dome as neon blue that would just set it off!

Good work guys.

The XTs will have the hole for the light/lens at the back of the console but will not have any wiring. You'll need to run this yourself.

Since I had front footwell neons, I spliced into this wiring and just ran the new cables down the side of the console and into the little hole. The end result is all good.

Oooh. I have the brightest T10 I could find in mine, but the bastards are usually directional, and I've never really been happy with the brightness. When the LED points 'up' from th socket, that means most of the light is shining into the guts of the console, and not as much out the lense.

That festoon idea looks to be the trick.

Must go and fix now.....

I've ALWAYS purchased my LEDs off this chap on ebay called warden_jp2002. He sells VERY BRIGHT LEDs at very reasonable prices.

I went into RepCo when I first started doing my mod, and they wanted about $8.00 for one T10. Warden will see you two of them DELIVERED for just over $6.00 with the refractor lens so you get a really good spread of light. Here's an example:
