Hey Guys,

Own a BA Falcon Ute and there are these black strip side door mouldings (see attached pic). I want to take these off and paint to white. (Investing in some blue GT Stripes soon )

My problem is I've been talking to a couple guys and we're not sure if these moulding can just pop off and back on? or is there some hidden screws somewhere along the way?

Hey mate, I painted mine last weekend. Just start at one end of the strip and gently prise them off. they're only held on by doublesided tape

i am doing an au ute's side strips atm.
try not to bend the strips as u get them off as the plastic stretches,
i used a new razor blade and cut them off gently, watch your fingers.
they will need the mounting tape on the back replaced too, best off removing this before u paint them.

I know this will probably sound like a stupid question however...

Is there any particular type of double sided tape used for this? Any difference from your everyday use to car applications?

I just used general automotive stuff from Autobarn but it's not sticking too well

I've used Haigh's tape from Autopro, and on long and/or larger moldings, it will come off slowly over time. I'm currently trying the weatherproof stuff from Bunning's - time will tell if it's up to the job.
Someone will recommend 3M tape I'd imagine - I've talked to a few smash repairers, and they say you can't beat the ford factory tape - none could confirm whether it's 3M though. Only thing is I don't know if you can buy it separately, and not just on new moldings.
You might find it easier overall to paint the strips on the car - mask, sand, plastic prime, then apply your acrylic. You'll find if you don't have plastisiser in the paint(or whatever it's called), that little impacts like door hits, etc might chip the paint easier. If you get a factory painted strip at the wreckers and bend it, you'll notice the paint flexes and doesn't crack or crows foot.
Other thing is getting the old tape off - a hot air gun mightn't do good enough if the factory tape has been on a long time, so you'd probably need a caramel wheel so as to not damage the paint.
Hopefully a smash repairer will add or correct me if the above is all crap.

yeah all good ^^
3m is the go, most auto paint stores will stock it. can get 10 metres for around $12,
best installed when it is over 25 degrees too, best adhesion.
and make sure the surfaces u are sticking it to are very clean.

getting old stuff off can be time consuming too,
easiest in warmer weather
i use a sharp razor blade then hard plastic razor blade to clean it up,
then final cleanup with thinners (not if using acrylic) and mask clean area where the tape will stick on the moulding before painting all helps it last

yeah flex aid can be added to paint to help it move but 90% of the time its not used,
2 pack has some give in it also compared to acrylic.

yeah another vote for the 3M stuff.
i got a roll from my local smash repair place and heated it with a hair drier so it was realy sticky and have had no problems.

Cheers for all the help guys. Like the idea of using a hair drier to make the tape even more sticky. Hopefully get it all done soon then will post new pics of the car
