Firstly good luck with your HSC hope you do well. The more work you do to the car your self the more saticfaction and respect you'll have for it, try some prep and paint work your self take your time if it dont look right then do it again. There are heaps of people here that will guide you in right direction and labour costs arn't cheep. As for colour you have to go with your own thoughts as to the look you want. An old friend built an xc ute in pine lime and finnished with s**t loads of clear that looked sweet as with lots of chrome.

tomorrow hopefully i will be able to sand a bit more and a bit more prep before i etch prime, followed by a prime,

the glue stuff inside the doors is to hold the plastic sheet on the door, stops water damaging the door trims, on most old cars its missing
the quarter windows i think have a couple of screws up top of the window frame, take them out and u can rock it back and forth and it should slide out top first.
there are heaps of whites around, i resprayed a xb ute couple of years ago and used polar white from a 98 festiva, very clean looking white compared to the factory yellowy polar white from 1975
u could also try winter white from the fg's that is very clean/bright
or go to your local paint shop and have a look through their paint chips and pick a colour

i will go to the paint shop tomorrow and i'll let you know what colour i pick

its just a thick sheet of plastic a bit like the heavy duty plastic bags fridges and washers come in, cut it out so the door handle can poke thru and the window winder too, then use contact adhesive of even 100 mile an hour tape to hold it to the door inner frame
it stops the moisture/rain from getting on the door trims' wooden/cardboard backings and warping

u only need to rub it back a bit, just enough to see that its scuffed when u dry it off
u are only keying the paint so the primer will stick

plastic sheet can be found anywhere, try appliance shops they may have some out the back from packing etc

UPDATES

ok well this morning i discovered that the window will come out with a bit of force,
shortly im off to give mercedes benz my bank details, Woop Woop New job.

Also on My xc today the drivers side passenger door will be getting reprimed and painted white, hope my first attempt at spraying comes up good, lol

yesterday i replaced the starter motor with one off an el wagon, they bolt up perfect but wiring is different, so i had the auto electrician who wired it up for the large price of $0 ha, i went to school with him so mates rates.

then it turns over like its about to take off but no spark, so out come all the plugs to see that one was crushed.

after zipping down to supercheap before they close and $25 later engine fires up on first crank, Wonderful,
even started this morning first go with no choke or nothing, it might have something to do with the starter motor turning over twice as fast as the ones that came factory in the xc

pictures of sprayed door will follow tonight.

Brad

Well done on the engine firing up.

Don't worry too much about your first paint attempt. Just put on light coats, and wait 10mins or so before laying down the next.

And if it turns out bad, it is only paint, and you can start over again quite easily.

Cheers
BenJ

i painted a blue panel for my ed, and i was able to get it exactly the same colour and when i got onto the final clear coat i hadnt bleed that air tank so it had a bit of moisture which left a brown patch so now im going to rub, it back and drain the tank inbetween each coat,

you need a water trap on your compressor to catch the moisture... :)
