Hi guys, after looking for hours at Bunters thermo fan doco, i can't work mine out.


I must have a different fan, my fans have a single plug with two red wires, and two black wires. Which do i connect to what?

Also could someone kindly take some pictures of their wiring set ups, as i find it easier to follow pictures, than to follow writing.

just done a thermo fan install on my ed wagon


if your wiring the thermos in series connect a red and a black together and connect the other red to the power out on the relay which is pin 30 i remember rightly

if wiring the thermos to a individual relay connect bothe blacks to earth and a red cable to the positive out (pin 30) on each relay

Hey man, that's awesome, thanks for that! Solves the puzzle very well. I just did a quick photo chop so it ties in with what i'm doing, how does this look? Will it work ok? I CBF putting another cable into my firewall, so that part can wait.

the fans with the single plug are el fans.. ef fans have 2 plugs...

u will need 1x 30 amp fuse for each fan though

but u realise u will only have one fan on when the temp switch cuts in, unless u turn the a/c on

Thats how it is on the EF/L's isn't it? Or do they run both fans when temp cuts in?

Dont remove the A/C Relay - if you dont have the fans on with the A/C then your going to at best stall your A/C Compressor, at worst overpressurise it.

I would definitely still have the AC relay in there for when the AC is used, what i was getting at above is don't the EF fans only use one fan for temp and one for AC? Or do both fans turn on when temp is triggered?

Be creative with the wiring.

Using Factory Wiring, there are 3 wires that control the speed. The options are :

2 fans low speed, 1 fan low and 1 medium, and then both fast (From memory)

On the EL, they options are both on Low speed, and both on high.

Most people seem to switch them seperately. Ive done this before (Way before BPT) using the BMW Thermoswitch which has 2 temperatures to trigger. Fans come on low when temp rises, high when it gets hotter, and the A/C turns them on Low as well. The only thing I never figured using thermofan logic was how to get the fans to go on Low for A/C, unless they were already on low in which case they went to high. But... I think ive just got an idea!.

I'll be wiring these into my XF as well - same switch. I sketched a basic circuit out at work 2 days ago again. Your looking at : Low speed is fans running in Series, High Speed is fans running in Parallel.

If you have the fans "Wired" in series as default, then turning one relay on will turn on the low speed.
If you have another two relays wired correctly (one NO, One Changeover) then when the "high" speed function turns on, the fans are disconnected from each other - and each switched directly to 12v.

Make sense? - no. I have the factory wiring diagram somewhere.

I drew this up, this is the factory stuff off the EL... That is two speed settings... both on low, or both on high... EF has three speed settings...



If you want something custom to work with air con I can draw it up for you so your ac brings them on slow or fast (your call) and can trigger it off a tridon temp switch (something with two contacts so you get both low and high speeds)...

Super cheap can get tridon things... Just pick one with the right thread and right temps for the fans...

Ef Fans are all ECU Controlled - so the ECU knows that A/C is on, and also if the A/C Circuit goes over pressure - so fans can be any speed.
... not a fixed combination. Hence some cars have a seperate fan for A/C.

was ages ago I drew that up... Only thing I missed was the fact the wires that run power to the relays are switched with the key, not on all the time...

Also the colours represent the Ford wiring colours...
