im pretty sure a flash tune can get rid of the smart sheild, but thats like a $700 box plus a tune...

but you could just use the AU wiring looms :D

Wrong, sorry.

AU 1.5 models (aka "Smartshield update") have a 2-button remote.

AU2's on have the 4-button remote. The change to the remote corresponds to increased BEM functionality in AU2's and is totally independent of the security system.

The key is the only definitive way of telling if an AU has Smartshield or Smartlock. Apart, of course, from the "Smartshield" sticker on the left rear fixed quarter window...

well ive never heard of a series 1.5 nor are they listed in spare parts..
so my response was not completely wrong based on my information, im not saying there isnt a few change over cars, as we know ford are retards..
but i also posted pics of the different keys..
so if the remote post was wrong my other post was right... so it makes up for it.. :P

AU1.5 isn't a factory designation AFAIK, it's just what they were called on AFF when this same discussion was had about 3 years ago. It's just quicker than typing "Smartshield Update" all the effing time. May '99 rings a bell for me, it's when power front windows became standard on the Forte as part of the upgrade. This change isn't widely recognised - I had a standup fight with NRMA over my car. They wouldn't accept that the power windows and immobiliser were standard equipment and insisted I list them as options and stipulate a value for them, which I couldn't do because they were standard... even though there was nearly a full year's production in this spec before AU2 came out.

I have read that AU 1.5 (Smartshield update) cars have the Smartlock style remotes.

Easiest way I know of is dash lamp, ECU box code, or rear 1/4 window glass (should say Smartlock or Smartshield).

Also, as a side note, the 1.5 cars use AU1 MAP and temp sensors, which use a different transfer to the AU2. Though you can run an AU2 bin in them, it won't work properly due to the difference in sensors.
