Gday all,
My '95 XG ute is having a few issues. I recently bought the ute not running about a month ago, the previous owner had put in a brand new coil and dizzy. found the fuel pump had died and the timing was out. So i put in a spare fuel pump and timed the dizzy and away she went. A few weeks later the car started chugging along on a cold start and then gave some backfire, once it was warm though the XG was fine. Then last week it was backfiring again and blew a giant bloody hole in the muffler, so i installed a brand new fuel pump, new fuel filter and cleaned the idle speed control. She would idle nicely for a couple minutes and then just cut out. Now over the weekend i hooked up a timing light and found i had no spark at all, so i checked and cleaned all the relays, fuses and earths. Went to restart the car and noticed no fuel pump sound and no spark still. If anyone has any ideas to get the beast going again that would be great |

It could be the tfi module in the dizzy, was the dizzy a new or used one?

disconnect plug from coil-check for power at red/green wire-(use tungstram test light-flasher globe with 2 wires connected will do)-check for pulse at pink/blue wire by attaching test light across both wires-should pulse while cranking-
check ecu relay and fuel pump relay are both working-(near battery under relays along inner gaurd)if ecu relay inop. then fuel relay will also be inop.- remove distributor cap and check distributor is actually turning constantly incase of stripped drive gears to operate distributor - make sure carbon brush is still fitted to center inside distributor cap- |

thanks for the replies guys,
the dizzy is brand new along with the coil. last week after putting in a brand new fuel pump, i turned the key to acc and noticed no fuel pump sound, so i sprayed both relays with contact cleaner and the fuel pump started going again. Im hoping its just a faulty fuel pump relay as i have another on its way to me now. Ive also taken the cap off the dizzy and all looks good inside, no wiggle at all in the rotor. |

Pump does not operate on Acc. Only when turned to reds.

Find the diagnosis connector in the cabin fusebox, earth the top right pin, turn IGN on (engine off).
Pump should be running continously - this tests the wiring , fuel pump relay and ECU relay too. These relays are under the coolant bottle in the passenger vehicles (can't remember with the XG), so they can likely get corroded from overspill, etc.

yeah sorry I meant reds
The smartlock jewel flashes normally and once I turn it to reds the smartlock light goes out which is normal I believe? |

ecu and/or fuel pump relay,
pick a part that sht, i did and got 3 of each put into the bottom of my toolbox for myself and they now live in the glove box

fuel pump will prime when ignition is turned to reds as swc mentioned then stop -will then engage when turned to crank or engine fires-
do you have spark or not ,as fuel relay fault wont stop spark |

haha @falcon96xr6 i wish i could mate, we only have one wreckers in town and they want $50 per relay the crooks
@snap0964 Thanks mate ill try that, the relays are near the break master on the upper left side of the engine bay on '95 XG @TedW I have no spark, checked with timing light and it gets nothing, then pulled plugs out and attached them to ignition leads, earthed them and got no spark |

Awesome news
I took out the old ecu and put in an ecu I got off a mate, left the car in reds for about 45 mins and boom got spark, but still no fuel pump, he then handed me a fuel pump relay, swapped it with the old one.. Crank.. Crank.. Fire!!! She's now idling beautifully Now to replace my blown muffler and she'll be back on the road |
