the regal tyres ive got on my 17x8's dont have a psi max rating. ive been told they need higher pressures because of the width, but i dont know how much is too much.

whats everyone else run?

i now run 17s and on the tyre wall it recomends 44psi and on my nieghbours ute it has 18s and also recomend 44psi

44psi on 17x8 is way too high. at this press. you will be wearing the centre of the tyre out way too fast. i work as a mechanic for a major tyre/wheel retailer (no its not ttf) and run tyres pressures as follows with no dramas and excellent tyre wear

13" - 32psi
14" - 34psi
15" - 36psi

16"-17" - 38psi
18"-19" - 40psi
20" - 42-44psi

and by the way, for future reference the max inflation rating is exactly that. the maximum recommended inflation for that particular tyre it is NOT what it should be pressured as

For street use I run 40psi in the rears and about 38 for the fronts. Plus another 5psi or so for track days with 17" 235's.

In my experience 10 differing cars and about 800,000klm over 20+ years... you need to run a few extra PSI to maximise tyre life, roadholding and braking. Especially in the wet.
The exception being off road in the sand when much lower pressure is required.
The specified tyre pressures on the door sticker are indicative of a "Soft" comportable ride. I run about 38-40 with 15-16 and do not have ballooning issues...the centre does not wear unevenly. When I has 17" wheels with 235.50 series rubber I found you need that pressure about 42-45 PSI. Of course you may be able to drop pressure a little if you have siffer springs, shocks, roll bars as the tryes will be kept much squarer on the road. Oh and on the trailer with light truck tyres it's about 60 PSI can you believe it!
I have been getting a bit of edge wear due to severly worn front shocks but sticking fronts on the back soon squares them up. For best tyre life you should swap front to back every 10k but never side to side with modern radials.

when you got a heavy load in the car putting pressure down on the tyres.
so you can pump them up to the 44psi to stop the rim crashing into the road when you hit a large bump or something



The wear patterns of an underinflated, properly inflated and overinflated tire

Overinflation causes tires to wear more in the center of the tread. The tire pressure should never exceed the maximum that is listed on the side of the tire. Car manufacturers often suggest a lower pressure than the maximum because the tires will give a softer ride. But running the tires at a higher pressure will improve mileage.

Misalignment of the wheels causes either the inside or the outside to wear unevenly, or to have a rough, slightly torn appearance.

15" 32-36psi.
16" 36-38psi.
17" 36-40 psi.
18"+ 40 psi.
I was a tyre fitter and aligner for 10 years.

when i got new 235's fitted the tyre place suggested 32psi front and rear and thats what ive been running even though it sounded low

I think they wanted you to wear out your tyres faster so that you return quicker...

I run mine at about 38 - 40psi with 235

i have been told for my 225/55/r15 no higher then 32psi

Yeah I run my 215/60R15 at 38 psi round the city. But freeway cruisin I pump them up to 40psi and I get a 7.9L /100km fuel economy. So go figure

Try not to get too confused.
All these tyre pressures mentioned should be at normal operating temp. Cold tyre pressure is what should be used to determine pressure readings.
Drop about 4 psi when cold.

iv got 17x7.5's with 235/45/r17 and i use 34psi and sometimes upto 36psi.
im goin to get 255/40's on the rear when i get new tire (not for a while) so what pressure should i use on them??
