Mates EF dies the other day. Fuel is okay but no spark.

Putting in a new coil pack in, sat arvo but just wondering about two things.

1) The EF ECU will still supply spark signal to coil packs with a faulty Cam Angle sensor?

2) The EF ECU will supply NO spark signal to the coil packs if the Crank Angle sensor is faulty?

Is this RIGHT????

Cheers..

yeah that is right, make sure you also have 12v to the coil packs, and that the ecu has power also as a bad power relay or fuse will also cause it not to fire.

Usually if a coil pack goes you will lose 2 cyl... not all 6..

The power relay your talking about is the one next too the green fuel pump relay under the coolant reservoir?

His wife was driving the car around a corner and the engine coughed a couple of times and then stalled. Hasn't started since. No spark on all 6 leads!

I should also check those fuses up near the battery (Ign etc).

Do you think the crank angle sensor plug might need a clean?

It's going to be a fun day tommorrow. I reckon I will stuff around for 1 hour replacing the coil packs and the car will still not start!!

Anymore more info etc, greatly appreciated.

if it stopped all of a sudden, then its not likely the coilpack. check the relays, even swap them around to elimnate them, check all the fusible links, battery terminals etc
Check for power at the coil pack plug (if you move the airbox out the way you can get your hand in there and unplug it, pull it up and probe it with a multimeter)
Check for power to the injectors, etc.
Does the interior light work? Smartlock light?

smartlock light flashing on dash. The motor does turn over just no spark. Fuel pressure good.

The plug going to the coil packs, is it ign 12V and the others to the fire the 3 coils? I have a Fluke multimeter from work so I can test all this. Should I back probe pins from the ECU first? If so which Pins?

Sorry for the all the questions, but I only have ever worked on EA,EL falcons with the dizzy coil ign system.

Cheers...

Update;

Mate got a ign coil not a coil pack from the shop so yeah I told hime too take it back and get a refund.

Anyway cleaned the battery terminals, checked all fuses relay etc, car will now start after about 20secs cranking then you can rev it for about 10secs and then it dies.

Takes another 20sec of cranking to get it to start then dies again. When car is started will hold revs up high without a miss then just cuts out.

Tested the injectors and they are pulsing, sparking only on every couple of cranks.

Any Idea's- Smart lock Maybe- His ctrl/light fuse is okay but the interior light doesn't work. Smartlock light is flashing on dash as normal.

Any idea's.

Take the crank angle sensor off, clean it as well as the toothed wheel on the balancer. Do a quick check on the CAS, should be around a couple of ohms resistance from memory.

So just undo the bolts pull it out and spray everything clean with CRC 5.56 Electrical spray. Probably have to take the thermo fans and belt off to get at it. Have checked the wiring to the CAS all okay.

We put in a spare coil pack and it is still doing the same things cranking for about 20secs then starting. Need to pump the accelerater while starting, will rev and hold for about 10-30secs then it will just stall.

ECU relay been replaced with working one. The fuel injectors getting power on every crank(using a small 12v bulb). Fuel pressure good, pump good, new fuel filter fitted.

If the CAS is the problem will it cut out the power to the coils until it gets a good signal? Any idea's

Okay I have now fixed my mates EF falcon, it's running like a dream.

After getting a wiring schematic I just back probe the ECu with my Multimeter. CAS tested good at 354ohms, then tested for 12V at coil pack- yes then found the problem that the ECu was switching earth to the other 3 wires on the coil pack plug.

Went to the wreckers and we picked a 2nd hand EF auto ECU, installed it and now the car runs sweet.

Anyway he has put on a carton of XXXX gold and a BBQ, so got to go.

Cheers..........
