fantastic work as always ben, i was looking at the barra motor and with my latest mods to my motor which you know about, i learnt that the EA-ED thermostat bypass tube hugs the motor where as the EF/EL one you have fitted sits right out beyond the intake manifold thus making it stick out and noticeable. perhaps fitting a EA-ED unit from the old motor and a little modding will allow you to drop the pipe work straight under the intake and out of the way

I looked into your suggestion, however the Box Car Log manifold metal pipe doesn't go down far enough to clear the BBM.

The EL version only comes out flush with the outside edge of the BBM and shouldn't interfere with any thing.

BA DOHC 14 - Conversion Parts + Other Purchases

A couple more parts have come in that are needed to complete the conversion.

The first item is a Tacho Interface Module. This gizmo produces a normal tacho signal from the BARRA multi coil ignition and will allow the E Series components to still work. The intention is to supply the E Series ECU with the tacho signal, so the A/C, trip comp, and tacho will function as per normal.

I purchased this item from Murray, a long standing member and techno wiz. You may recall I also sourced the Smartlock Bypass Module through Murray too. Murray is great to deal with, and was very happy to provide answers to any questions I had regarding the module.

It came packaged in a nice sturdy box.


The internal components were well wrapped in bubble wrap, included the module, a plugged loom extension, and detail instructions.


I am very impressed with the professionalism displayed.

The second item is an Oil Pressure Adaptor. This adaptor allows for 3 different fittings to be attached, which in my situation is just what I need. The BA Oil Pressure Switch, the E Series Oil Pressure Sender, and for the future a feed line for a turbo. There are multiple thread sizes included, along with a blanking plug in case you don't need the third outlet.


For $15 including postage from eBay, this was a good buy.

I have also purchased some 7 core trailer wiring for the BA Electronic Throttle Pedal install, and some 25amp power and earth cable to supply the engine with some juice.

Other Purchases

In addition to the items needed for the BARRA conversion I have been picking up the odd bits here and there.

I picked up a grill insert for the front bar. Not bad for $62 posted. Just have to find some time to fit it.


I got this portable speaker box with a couple of 6 x 9 speakers for $25


I also found some cheap amplifiers on eBay.

The right hand one is a 200w 2 Channel that will power the above speaker box, and the right hand one is a 1200w 4 channel amp that will power the front stage and the sub. Also need time to install these. I spent about $60 on the pair.

I also got a freebie off fairlane6970. His NL Lane had the SLS suspension replaced due to a failure in the control module, but he said the pump was still working fine. He was kind enough to allow me to remove the pump. I will acquire the rest of the standard SLS bits and fit it to the wagon to control the air bags. A job for the future I think.


And today I picked up one more freebie. A big *$&%$ self tapping screw in my right front tire. Not happy!!!!! Now am running one of the Prowlers, and I am quite liking the black centre spokes again. Hmmmmm. Too many projects on the boil to consider painting the AJRs LOL.

if you can get your head around reading schematics then its pretty simple. you just need to remember cars are quite simple. understand them a little and it all just clicks

BA DOHC 15 - Wiring Progress

Made up the first wiring loom this week.

This loom consists of:

25amp 12v+ - to supply clean power to engine and PCM - 12v Ign will be triggered by relay
25amp Earth - to supply clean earth direct to battery
Fuel Pump Relay trigger wire from PCM
HEGO Signal
HEGO Signal Return
PWR Steering Pressure Switch Signal - needs to be converted to 5v as per BA Spec
PWR Steering Pressure Switch Signal Return
Throttle Pedal - has seven wires so used 7 Core Trailer wiring


I tested for continuity and then taped it all up. The ends of the loom will be connected to the BA Body loom.


Then I fitted the loom to the ED in approximately the location of the EB1 engine bay wiring loom.




For the uninitiated EA - EB1 used a different engine bay loom that runs around the base of the strut towers, and over the transmission hump behind the engine. EB11 - ED the loom runs over the top of everything and above the rocker cover.

hey ben,

looks like your slowly but surely getting there as per usual, you seem to have a nack for nutting things out.

that oil pressure adapter, is that ready to screw into the barra with the current blocking fittings on the t peice? cause i will be looking into installing some gauges in the fairmont soon and that adapter looks like it will do the job but in the looks rather long and I'm concerned about the adapter not being up to the task on a daily driven car, so your opinion would be appreciated

I think that by the time you apply thread tape/paste to the joins and tighten them up appropriately the assembly should be sufficiently rigid to survive on a daily drive.

I will try and fit it to the engine soon to get some pics so we have a better understanding of how far it protrude under the BBM etc.

Time will tell in the end.

ben, are you at all worried about the loom at that location with the turbo exhaust running past? perhaps hiding it OR running it higher in the bay away from the exhaust heat. if you plan on shielding it then all should be ok.


most turbo setups use a block like that (mine isnt as chunky, mine is more like a fancy looking unit but came with my turbo kit) there is plenty of room to fit it. you cant use an EA-ED guage/pressure stype switch under the manifolds due to the extended shaft they use. you will need to find an EF/EL unit. for the on/off switch there is no drama at all. the other way is to fit the switch sideways so it runs along the motor not straight out
