Geeze mate when you said you needed to get rid of some rust I had no idea you had a serious rust problem like that in the mighty wagon, Looks like you have it all under control though.
The bonnet looks like its come another step forward too. very impressed with Paulc's work it gives me ideas for my lane when it becomes a fulltime project car after i get my ute, I think the X series bonnet vents look better than the E series ones anyway! Cant wait to see the bonnet on the wagon. Cheers Josh |

That rust in front of wheel rear wheel arch is normal in wagons. I have done exactly the same repair to my right, and the left has been replaced from petrol cap to back door sill... (Obviously I could have just done the rusty patches if it wasn't for Asian driver influence)...
Whatever. BENJ - You may have read my rantings before, but you should remove the plastic bits above the rusty area and all the trim at bottom of rear side window above filler cap. Note how all the original rubber seals have perished to nothing. Another way of checking is to take the boot lining out so you can see the inside of the wheel arch from the boot and put the hose on the window. Watch the water run in! Another thing is if you take out the roof lining and pour rust converter into the frame above doors, you'll be amazed where it comes out and gets to. I found water getting in ABOVE the doors where there is a 0.5mm gap in a seam! Use a small mirror with roof lining removed and check for rust in the creases about four inches forward of the pillar behind rear seat passengers... If there's no rust staining (or, judging by the state of your wheel arch it could be flaking and bubbling by now) I'll eat my hat or something else unpleasant. I guess you old box car lovers don't have the rubber strip that runs the whole way along outer door sills from front guard to rear wheel arch? These things seem to stop the sill rust a little. Mind you, you're miles away from the ocean now - where did the car spend most of its life? I know, you've seen it before.... But, others may not of.... Sorry about the thread hijack (usual Fiendish disclaimer applicable...) |

Yes, the EL engine is now in the Wagon. We started this morning at about 8.30, and had it out sitting on the concrete shortly after. The swapping of the Log Manifold and T5 was smooth sailing. Troyman dropped around at my request, as I had forgotten to buy another spigot bearing, so we went for a short excursion to Bursons. I also got an engine mount, as funnily enough, both engine mounts were broken. Before we ducked out, I sanded and painted the ED water pipes. The engine was reinstalled early afternoon and the rest of the day was spent piecing it all back together. Oh, and I connected the gearbox wiring to the neutral switch, so the wagon can not start in gear. Then it was time to turn it over and see if it would run. YES!!!! CRAP!!!!!!!!!! CLANG CLANG CLANG CLANG CLANG %&*()#%$@)&$@)*@#$#@% Not AGAIN Yes AGAIN It would seem that when I put the EL engine down on the ground with a brick under the back so keep it level, the sump pushed up ever so slightly so that now the BLOODY CRANKSHAFT WAS HITTING THE SUMP!!!! AGAIN!!!! Seems this engine has to have its say before performing better than it should. The fix this time involved the strategic placement of a long 1/2 extension bar up the side of the sump between it and the gearbox support leg, and then whacking the s**t out of with my 4 pound hammer. This action pushed the side of the sump inwards and the bottom of it downwards, creating the needed clearance and a fabulous lack of CLANG . Took the wagon for a run, and I am quite surprised at how much better it goes than the ED engine. I wouldn't expect the addtion of extractors to make that much difference. So as Paulmac has suggested, this EL engine must be a Wednesday engine, and is just a good one. I think he must be right. No pics for now, but I will get some tomorrow. Cheers BenJ I love watching your build threads, you tend to get stuff done very quick, it makes me feel lazy about doing my car up lol. Your EL engine runs good because its a hybrid lol, AU internals, they tend to rev more freely and rev up quicker and smoother.

It is a December 97 build, and the engine number identifies it as a normal EL block. The rocker cover will be coming off soon as the gasket needs replacing, so I will be able to check the head then.
