Last week I got some new battery terminals because as some of you may know, the early E-series ones are a bit marginal:
As you can see... Dissimilar metals, prone to corrosion and all that. So combined with a distribution block to plug all of the fusible links in, I ended up with this. I am not 100% happy with it. I think that I will get another distribution block to do the negative side. Some of the smaller negatives were a bit short for my liking and there is not much slack like the wiring in a certain Toyota Camry I had an encounter with last week. But, that is a story for another time. I had a little bit of trouble getting them to tighten up on the posts, hence the angle of the positive terminal. But since I had to pick up Fiona and if I didn't finish today I wouldn't have a car tomorrow. I swear I didn't copy you BenJ Also I rotated the tyres, not interesting. Cheers, Evan.

looking good. just be careful of the cable you use to the distro blocks.. i was stupid enough to think wire was wire and a 4g wiring kit on ebay would be enough for running a few power wires to distro blocks for the factory wires to make it neat.. then this happened 50k's from home
so it was redone to this dodgy soldier on the terminal to get the cable to grip (as my ring terminals kept falling off) but yes.. lesson learnt, dont use cheap cables |

Thanks for the heads up. No engine bay fires so far. I just checked it and it doesn't seem to have got hot.

Yesterday I modified my rear doors to stop them rattling. Adjusted the door catches .
This afternoon I did a 'site survey' of doing the transmission mounts in the 323. Looks like if I support the transmission, just in case, and drop the crossmember with the mounts that will make it easier. Anyone see a problem with that?

That was better than what my friend said at the bar. "I think that I parked near you." "Yeah." "Yep, near some old car"

Hi all. Today I replaced the transmission mounts on the 323.
I removed the crossmember and after much effing around with the rear one, I had them both out. It was a lot more difficult than the manual suggested. 'Undo mounting bolts, undo through bolt, remove...' Old verses new: There's your problem. There should be rubber where that gap is. And if I can move it with my fingers, imagine what the engine was doing. This new one is much better. All installed: Now the car doesn't try to shake itself to death sitting at the lights in drive. Quite happy with the result. Cheers, Evan.

Today Fiona was complaining that the 323 was coughing at idle. So, when I got home I started running through some tests. I tested the airflow meter and that was all good. Then I tested the idle speed control solenoid. The specs say 11 - 13 ohms. The unit on the car tested at 60 ohms. Hmmm, I reckon that could be the problem.
I started the engine and then unplugged the solenoid. The revs went from 750 to about 1100 RPM. I plugged it back in and went for a drive to warm it up. Once I had it up to temperature, I stopped and unplugged the ISC. Revs went up again and I jumped back into the drivers seat. And you know what? It was the smoothest it has ever been. Hopefully it won't be difficult to cold start... So guess what I'll be doing this weekend? Scrounging through Pick and Payless, hoping that there is a 1.8 litre 323 or Laser with a good ISC lol. cheers, Evan.

I managed to find a good one today. I found two actually. We bought the one that had less rust in it (coolant galleries) and I installed it. Now it runs pretty smooth.

So today I actually did some work on MY car. I did the all important mod that everyone who has a manual Falcon should do. That of course is the TROYMAN firewall reinforcement plate.
I cut the actual plate out during the week along with the initial shaping of the tube, which is actually a 1/2" black steel socket. It took some finessing to clear the cable tube and the brake booster. I got the socket fitting over the tube ok, then I went hunting for a suitable washer. I couldn't find one sooo, I had to make my own. I got that welded on to the end of the socket and ground back flush. I did a quick mock up on the car to see if the cable fit properly. I marked it to get the right orientation and then I got to weldin'. It does a good job, doesn't it. I drilled the screw holes and did the final mock up on the car: A quick lick of paint and then final assembly was finished: Doing fabrication and welding is something that I really enjoy. Can you tell? Anyway, now I don't have to worry about pulling the clutch cable through the firewall every time I de-clutch. Cheers, Evan.
