Today I picked myself up another project. A set of Pacemaker 4499's at a very reasonable price from BenJ. I plan on getting the extra flanges and gaskets and modifying the cat myself. I even found instructions from Pacemaker on the net.
I finished another project this afternoon by way of wiring up the distribution block for the negative together with 35mm2 battery cable. I'm not sure what that is in standard wiring gauge. Looks around 4ga. And I gotta say that the XR seats make some pretty comfy living room furniture. Cheers, Evan.

So, this afternoon I picked up some more parts that I had on order at Burson's for Fiona's car. Rear discs and pads:
They quoted me $233, but when I picked them up he knocked them down to $197.01, so that was a win. After that I made my way to Glendenning to get some gaskets and a flange to suit my extractors. They found the extractor flange and gasket and the cat outlet gasket easily enough. The exhaust manifold gasket however was a different story. We spent about 20 minutes looking through all manner of gaskets for different cars and 'FORD 6 CYLINDER' that didn't fit, we found the right one. It turned out that when they moved to their new premises, they wrote all of the extractor gaskets off, so when it came to money, he said don't worry about it. It's good getting FREE stuff! It's worth knowing people in the industry lol. Cheers, Evan.

Well, today I fixed the rear brakes on Fiona's car. As usual I took some photos.
I bought a new toy to help me: An impact driver for less than $30 to undo the rotor screws. Do you think that they were worn? Anyway, before: After: Much better. The thing about old cars is that when you fix something, something else will break. Today's installment was a screw in one of the tyres and a coolant leak which, happily, is not the water pump. *Phew*. I tried my old Pulsar rims on for size. They look good, but the hex on the wheel nuts aren't long enough, so you can't tighten them properly. When doing maintenance, you should always keep a tidy work area (not pictured). I am slowly getting down the list without adding too much to it. I am looking forward to installing my extractors. I think I'll do it next weekend. Cheers, Evan

Well, I loaded up the van with 358,000km on the clock and the timing belt light on ready to install my extractors tomorrow. It looks like rain tomorrow and I really don't trust myself to weld exhaust pipe with a stick without mishap. So, I am going to do it at work and use the MIG. I left the car at work so that the exhaust parts will not be nice and hot when I go to work with them.

Today was the big day to chop up bits of my exhaust system and put the extractors on.
This is what you get from Ford. It turned out that the flange in the middle of the manifold was loose and leaking. I had the exhaust manifold and cat out pretty quickly. That cast iron lump is bloody HEAVY! Slipped the new ones on: Tightened up the new capscrews: Now I just had to fill in this gap with something: Before too long and too many injuries, I had a naked cat. With the cat CHOPPED in the appropriate places, it was time to mock-up on the car: After that, it was time to get to weldin' Heat shield re-installed: Nothing else to do except bolt it up and kick it in the guts. Gee, I didn't think that the exhaust note would change that dramatically. It also got rid of the bloop bloop bloop exhaust leak noises. Since I was done, I went over to BenJ's as I wasn't sure about the heat load on the accelerator cable due to it's proximity to the new headers sans heatshield. Turns out he was doing exactly the same thing that I was doing to his car. What a coinkydink. Talking with SWC, no heatshield is only a problem if you have a plastic brake booster. That was a load off. Impressions on the extractors? Well, they sound pretty good. And there might be an increase in low down torque. Would the ECU have to re-learn to compensate for the change in the exhaust? Anyway, enough internetting. Time to enjoy this long weekend! Cheers, Evan.

I heard you leaving the caltex servo on Abbott road yesterday arvo
I was pulling up to the lights on the opposite side of the road and I heard something awesome and looked in my mirrors to see you taking off! It's bloody loud haha, but sounded mint accelerating through the gears

The cast iron stock headers are really really heavy, aren't they! I noticed that as I had a complete workout lifting the buggers out of the engine bay.
Very neat and good looking cat modification man. As uniacidz said, you might run into trouble with heat. My brake cylinder has had a few problems with heat, probably best to chuck a heatshield on it.

I only realised after I had completely finished, put PDF's in job folders . In regards to heat issues, my extractors have been on for 8+ years and the accelerator cable has never cracked and they get HOT within a minute of first starting her up...
Hell my immobilizer/alarms even closer and *touch wood* hasn't been affected by the heat! Heat shields can look good though for that added wank factor

Just did an oil change at 225,000km. Those Motorcraft oil filters are worth the money. 10,000km between changes and no tappet noises. The Ryco Z9's only last about 5,000km.
I nearly got away with doing an oil change without spilling oil on the driveway.

Well the lower steering column bearing has s**t itself. I've sprayed some white lithium grease into it and that has made it better. Just when I thought there was nothing wrong with it. It's times like this that make you wonder why you persist with e-series...
I guess I'm up for a new used column.
