Top post unclewoja.. definantly puts spark in perspective for a tuning newbie! Often we have a rough idea how to get a result, but never know exactly why we do it
Rightio.. updates from last night! Firstly thanks to Joe @ Crescent Motorsports for fitting me in last night! Waggin arrived on the rollers at about 6.30 (after taking 5 minutes to start her out the front of the workshop. lol), and didnt get off until.. hmm, after 11pm, i'd say. Joe and I didnt actually leave til 12.30am. heh After taking a few moments to get the hang of the new fancy Windows based MoTeC tuning software, we were off and running. Lots of work done under light and medium throttle, and then later in the night some work on full throttle. Tuning is far from complete but we're both satisfied that we have an excellent base map which provides good power and most importantly for me, safe A/F across the entire load and rev range.. all the way to 7000rpm Drivability has increased 10 fold compared to my 'on road' tune, which was already a massive improvement over what the EEC-V/Unichip combination offered, though I must admit the unichip was never re-tuned after the engine rebuild. We travelled about 200KM last night on the dyno, only using just over 1/4 of a tank, so I'd take a punt and say that economy wont be too foul, the guage didnt even move on the way home.. and I bet u could imagine how she was being driven So from here I'll be doing some small fuel/spark changes on the road and tweaking the function and compensation tables (cold start and post start are still way off!). Another dyno session may be up in the next week or so to start extracting some more serious power, though if we can't get any really thrilling figures we wont be spending too much more time on the N/A tune, time to start spec'ing a forced kit. It was good to see a few Fordmods people rock up to watch this historic event Regie, Yobboford, MRE-40L, MRS-40L, Ch0c0.. gg all! Oh, and no power runs were completed
Saw a few blurts to 130RWKW in 4th gear @ 3500rpm.. oh and she does 6RWKW/31nM at 100KM/hr in 4th at 50kpa

WOW I actually have space in my backyard again
The Dyno was amazing and Im not much into them, but the look on Brad's face last nite when the lil thing was being revved was priceless. Congrats hun on a job well done, the car is awesome and I know everyone involved was really happy with the outcome, makes me kinda worry what you have in store for us for the next project. * Separate note CHOCO no cookies for that stunt last nite* Keep up the good work boys and remember if your in the neighbourhood drop in to HQ and say Hello.

Hmmmm. I was going to get HPC coating on my extractors when I get them... me thinks I wouldn't mind glow-in-the-dark extractors though.
It's such a big decision. Do I want lower engine bay temps, or do I want my own portable set of engine bay worklights? It will be good, once Hyena and I get MS-II on our cars (well car really, I've yet to purchase one but everything is already planned), to see the difference in performance of the MS-II and the Motec. |

i found the 4L likes to run a lil leaner then most at high loads and loves a heap of timing. I was running 12.5:1 at high rpm/load(this is a safe A/F) and it was ok. now im running 12.8-13.1 at high loads and you can feel the difference. Same with the timing, i had a safe setting and now have advanced around 6 deg all over the map and it is a heap more responsie and tourquier also to obtain a smooth cruise with a lumpish cam, i recomend to run a lil richer. it wont make tooo much of a difference to eco, but will drive alot smoother. This also depends on your timing too i dont know about other motors, but the 4L respond to small changes is fairly large, so take your time getting it rite, and dont be shy trying stuff That's good info to know aswell. Last engine I tuned would idle on anything from 10 ATDC to 40 BTDC and at one stage I was running 50 BTDC @ full load @ 1000RPM going up hills in 5th gear and still wasn't getting any pinging (before I knew about how spark timing really worked that is). Setting idle, I've found, is not about you deciding what the engine will run on, it's about letting the engine tell you how it wants to run. And it's real easy too. You just adjust spark and fuel till you get the lowest possible MAP and that will give you your smoothest idle. |

LOL. Glow in the dark is definantly cool (well.. hot, rather) I think all aftermarket ECU's will acheive similar WOT/Peak RWKW.. things [may] start to get a bit different when you look at the rest of the curve, plus other load points... plus all the other bells and whistles.
