Use this s**t.
http://www.goopguys.com.au/product_details.php?id=9 Not the ultimate answer but better then chipping up the front bar. Either leave it on for the 3 months before taking it off and putting a new lot on or give it a coat before you head on a trip that you are expecting stone chips on.

There is a product that you can buy (I can't think of what it is called ) , it's like a clear plastic adhesive that sticks to the body of your car to protect your paintwork from stone chips . After I had my old VL Commodore resprayed I had the front section of my bonnet , nose cone , bumper and lower door sills covered with it and it work well . It took a while to put on but it looked much better then a car bra . I'm pretty sure the company that makes it is advertised in Street Fords magazine or something .

You can get whats called Ceramic Clear Coat, from what I've heard, its a lot tougher than regular clear coat to prevent chips and scratches. No idea on price though. Clear plastic can be noticeable and if you get polish stuck around the edges it looks really really bad. Car bra's are good but will scratch if you dont keep them clean and dry and they can be a bastard to put on (have to lay on the ground). Best way is to keep a real good distance to the car in front while going up the highway.

3M makes an adhesive clear film, tough as apparently. Can even cover the lights etc too.
