I am planning on getting an alarm soon that will have PKE and full control push button start (no key), because well, it's cool.
I have no problem bypassing smartlock either at the ign barrel or by J3. The few systems/features, that I have thought of, that I will pass off control to the new alarm are: Boot release, central locking, interior light. What other systems/features, that are controlled by smartlock, will need to be considered? |

Only one I can think off is the starter relay lines at the BEM jumpered possibly.

I guess since smartlock is going to be bypassed, I could do that. Will help avoid the dry solder joint failure these can be prone to at least.

Wouldn't hurt, that's for sure.
Some good immobiliser/alarm technology coming out nowadays - Smartlock was good in it's day - but that day was long ago.

I think there's always been good stuff available, but the integration is where smartlock was better, but worse from an aftermarket alarm installation point of view.

I've been doing the occasional research on this trying to discover as many kinks as possible before I go ahead and buy a unit to do what I want it to, and I've just discovered another small detail regarding the interior light.
I was going to simply cut the wire from the BEM and let the alarm take control of it turning on and off when the car unlocks and locks. I've since discovered that this may potentially stop the engine from running as the BEM will lose it's power from the CRT circuit. The other detail is that the interior light switch at the headlight switch would also no longer work, if I had the alarm take over. It seems that the trigger for the interior light by smartlock is all done internally in the BEM. Trying to find the wire trace from the radio circuit to the light circuit that carries this trigger will likely be impossible for me to find so I'm not sure where to go from here. It's a small detail I guess but the light staying on for 20-30sec after locking the car will also trigger warning from the alarm. Any suggestions on what I might be able to here? |

mad it can be done but you will need a smartlock bypass module for the ecu to allow it to start (pm me if you want to go this way)
also check with your insurer if you you will still be covered if you install aftermarket remote start, a lot of insurers wont cover it |

I'm not going for remote start. What I'm going for is 100% keyless push button start. eg. walk up to the car with keys in pocket, car unlocks. I hop in and push start, car starts.
I will still need to bypass smartlock, but that's not an issue. I will either use a separate barrel, or just the electronics from one. Either way it will be tied to the alarm so smartlock still works. My biggest issues at the moment are selecting the right alarm, interior light control, and disabling the steering lock. |

When steering locks first came out in the 70's, cheapskates who would roll downhill to save fuel turned the engine off. Corner at the bottom and guess what happened ? Regards 96ELGli

I can't say I've found any mid range alarm that controls the domelight like smartlock does.
I used a SPST relay and a latching relay to achieve same - haven't had any issues with it triggering the alarm.

I guess the OP can drill the steering lock out and snap it , it is not really needed if you got a high end alarm
Guess if the car is VERY desirable thief's will go to any length to steal it so i guess let them they will just bring a car trailer / tow truck and a big a** 5 meter piece of solid pipe and snap the steering lock in 30 seconds and let the alarm sound Oh and if you run out as there snapping the steering lock you may startle them and get a smack with it in the head But i guess it wont happen thats just thinking the worst |

For what I want, I figure all I need to find is the output from the radio receiver in the BEM that triggers the interior light. Whether that is possible is yet to be seen. I can't beleive I didnt even think of it, but since im getting the car tuned with a j3 chip, i can just disable smartlock. No need for a bypass of any sort. |

Latching relay opens/closes the interior light return line to the BEM, SPST relay momentarily earths the courtesy light switch line.So on unlock, interior lights come on for 20 secs and fade off, on lock, lights go out if on.
