Hey all

Picked up an AU 1.5 XR8 (Jan 2000) for nix thanks to my mate Ray (snap0964) and want to fit all of my AU1 Fairmont Ghia stuff to it.

Does anyone know the differences between the AU 1.5 and AU 1 with respect to the cluster? The XR has Smartshield but with a Smartlock remote so I am hoping it is similar to the Ghia (theres a few things on the Ghia cluster I want that the XR does not have). Or is the 1.5 the same deal as the 2 meaning the BEM actually has a data line to control the cluster?

Going to whack the Ghia cluster into the XR to see what happens but I thought I would ask as well incase there was someone knowledgable regarding the AU 1.5 stuff...

Cheers
RD

only major difference is in the bem with smartshield + key reader and key vs smartlock, otherwise 99.9% of the rest is interchangeable.. you can put the ghia cluster in the xr if you wish it should work fine.. just not sure if the gear position lcd on the ghia will work or not..

Excellent, thanks Troy - thats what I was hoping to hear. Here's hoping the gear indicator plays ball, one of the things I am after.... along with the door ajar stuff including the fuel flap etc. I have another XR dial set that I will modify for gear selection if it works.

I think the door ajar stuff will be as the xr cluster, it shows all doors open when one is open, I think those features are done via bem, but its worth a try you never know...

Ah, interesting. Was out looking at the XR today and saw all 4 doors showing and thought it was an error. It has a 99 Fairmont BEM in it at the moment (long story getting the thing going with no keys :)). I know it will take a little hoodoo magic to get the fuel door ajar stuff installed, no mounting point for the sensor in the fuel flap and no hole for the wiring on the fuel door cavity. Ah, well, these things are sent to test us :)

Will do definitely, will start a garage thread once I have the Ghia all stripped... and I mean stripped! All the wiring etc down to an empty shell :)

Be interesting to know what transpires with that fuel gauge reading.

Thanks for the reminder, added to my list of things to look in to.

Was just reading this tech doc: documents.php?d=4 and it looks like all I need is to have separate wires for each door to get the door open display to work correctly on the high series cluster. Considering I am taking ALL the wiring out of the Ghia I *should* be able to retrofit into the XR what I need for various additions.... I hope :)

Whacking the Ghia cluster in to today to see what happens... not that I don't trust you Troy but just want peace of mind so to speak

Im 99% sure the gear position will work : The Gear position is part of the DOL Data (3 or 4 times every 12 bytes of data). So that will be fine.

Interesting to know what else the cluster does though. Sometimes I wish Id put my 220kw into an AU instead of a BMW for simplicity

Thanks Nigel, good to know. I will of course report back on what else I find with respect to the cluster.

That BMW of yours must be a beast with that 220Kw in it, something like that Merc is saw with a 2JZ Supra donk :)

The BMW is interesting - I dont get to drive it much due to "mods" right now.

ive got DOL data to a display in the dash - for Gear position, Engine Temp, Speedo, and for Cruise and ESS when I get playing.
I spent Chrissy changing the steering assembly over to later E46 style, later clockspring, and just about to bolt in an E46 M3 SMG (thats Paddle Shift) steering wheel - you can see where that ones going.

I have the TS50 Bin (I think) - and if it works, I'll consider a valve body change in the gearbox to get 1st working correctly as well.

Biggest delay so far was an exploding engine fan. Its also meant different radiator design, and now I have to take a much more careful look at the Thermo Fan situation!.

Shoulda got an AU I tells meself ;) Mwa hahahahaah

Wow, what a monster! Paddle shift would be awesome

Exploding fan? Ouch!! Not too much damage I hope....

Just think, when you're done it will be a one of a kind monster, unlike an AU. Me thinks you have done the right thing going with a Euro with Aussie power 8-)

IIRC, the AU clusters should have a diagnostic mode just like EF/EL's - displayed in the ODO area.
Have a gander at the tech docos. At least then you should be able to see if all data (digitally) is coming through.

Cool, will do.

Just tried to extract the the cluster from the XR and it is falling apart. I suspect it has been out before at some point. Waiting for the direct to sun to go away before doing any more.
