well that rules the charge rate out and the battery terminals. I will take it for a run today and see how it goes. Are there any other earth points I may have missed? I found one near the battery and one near the air box.
Sorry for all the questions, it is my first late model car with heaps of electrics. cheers Mick |

the purpose behind forumn is to ask questions .....
give as much detail as possible eg.were you driving or stopped when fault occured -wouldn't restart - gauges work or airbag light comes on - how often fault occurs etc. charge voltage is perfect at the moment - but may have intermittant fault - buy a cheap multimeter so you dont need your mates one or keep his for now - did you check for water at ECU ? also pull the drivers kick panel and check connections behind for water ? check multi wire connection near air box behind headlight for water and corrosion ? if fault is intermittant may take time to eliminate possible faults and find the actual cause. if you get it rescanned write down all codes for before they clear them for reference ... and to see what codes are reoccuring? dont forget to post result if you find problem unlike some people as this helps others with similar problems |

I drove around today in the wet. We have had a fair bit of rain. I found every puddle of water and drove through it. She didn't miss a beat!! I'm not 100% sure that it is fixed.
I haven't checked the ecu as yet. I will check that and the connectors in the morning. Thanks for the replies. Mick |

I was correct. Went out just then and tried to start it. It started but the gear indicator on the dash disappeared, and as usual the temp gauge stopped working. I turned the car off and when I tried to start again the smart shield light started to flash and it turned over, but wouldn't start.
I removed the key and tried again and it started??? I really have to get at it tomorrow and see if water is getting in. |

Well I just had a look at the ecu to see if there was water getting in and around, and what did I find!!
It seems as though the previous owner has changed the ecu. It is quite a dogy job I must say. The computer module is just floating there behind the bracket that wasn't bolted down and an earth wire that was just wrapped around the old rivet??? Maybee this could be my issue?? Where is the bem and how do you check it? Cheers Mick

The ECU needs to be earthed properly or there can be major issues.
BEM is located at the lower left panel next to the steering wheel. No real way to test it, get a known working unit and replace it. Do you have a workshop manual, ie Haynes, if not grab one, they are a useful source of information. |

you definitely need to fix that earth.. no earth, no ecu ,no run

Fixing the earth is my no1 priority now. I really hope that this was the issue!!
Should I disconnect the battery before I repair it? I'm not too sure about the ecu, it just hangs there? Are they supposed to have any padding or should it be bolted on? I will have to teck screw the cover plate on and solder a connection to the earth wire. Cheers Mick |

The plate that wraps around the ECU and then screws to the body is what holds the ECU in place.
You don't need to disconnect the battery but do so just to be safe. It will also reset the unit. |

looks like the ecu needs to go up a bit, it sits on the bottom edge of the bracket.
there is no padding its held firmly by the bracket.. to be safe Its best to disconnect the battery. |

I screwed the bracket in securely and re earthed the earth connection and it still has the fault:(
I was hoping after seeing the earth this morning, that it had to be it. I was wrong. I did notice that when I shift through the gears( without driving the car) it doesn't seem to go into the selected gear all the time. I put it in park from drive and the D was on the dash still instead of P. It then disappeared completely and once I turned the car off and tried to start again, the smart shield light was flashing and hence, the car turned over, but wouldn't start. |
