You may have a faulty ECU.

There is a switch or some sort of solenoid on the left side of the gearbox with a black plug goin into it. Does anyone know what this is and what it's function is?

Inhibitor switch. If it's faulty the car will not start.

I'm thinking maybee the inhibitor switch may be faulty. If I put it in park from another gear, it doesn't always say P on the dash. I can clearly hear a click from the gearbox or switch when it does go into park. When it shows D still on the dash once I put it into park there is no click.

I have decided to replace the inhibitor switch to see what happens.
I also would like to replace the BEM. Is it an easy process tor replace the BEM, and what steps would I need to take? I will change the inhibitor switch first at some stage this week. Hopefully this will be the problem Cheers Mick |

I replaced mine in my NA and it fixed my start and manual kickdown problems. Hopefully once you change yours the problem will go.

I honestly have not seen doggy work like I have seen in this car!!! Either the previous owner or the car dealer I purchased it from do not know a thing about pride or workmanship.
Had a quick look under the dash and the BEM is just hanging there. The bracket is there but they obviously decided to just let it swing. It has the same pink writing on it as the ecu and the ignition key. I would say the lot was purchased from a wreckers. Very disappointed at the moment, as I purchased the car as a family car and now I can't even take my 3 month old daughter in it as it may break down. The dealer wanted nothing to do with me when it first stopped which was only six days after buying it. I would love to name them but don't want to get myself in the s**t. Just waiting for the next surprise. Cheers Mick |

Clarify if AU or AU 3.............
inhibit switch also incorperates gear sensor.... if you replace the BEM you will need to have 2 keys programmed to BEM then link the BEM to the PCM with suitable scan tool .... the items you are listing indicate vehicle was not starting before so they replaced all necessary items from a wreckers to be able to start without having to program anything........... but before you go to much further have you checked vehicle history to make sure vehicle is not stolen or flood damaged from Queensland or similar - check with fair trading regarding any responsibility regarding any warranty from dealer ??? even if dealer says there is no warranty ....just a thought ! |

No, inhibitor switch and speedo sensor are on different sides of the gearbox. Inhibitor switch is on the lower side towards the bellhousing on the passenger side of the gearbox and the speedo sensor is located on the high side of the gearbox extension housing on the drivers side.

Gear sensor = PRNDL sensor = part of inhibitor switch
should be 2 connections to inhibitor switch left side of gearbox just in front of electrical connector into transmission.allows vehicle to know what gear is selected ..... |

I replaced the inhibitor switch last night. it didn't make any difference. That rules that out as well.
I noticed the temp gauge stop working so I hit the dash, and it began to work again. I then decided maybe there is a loose connection behind the dash. I removed the dash and sprayed electrical contact cleaner on all of the connections and it seems to have done the trick I will take it for a run today to see if the problem was the connections. It would explain the LCD display and temp gauge intermittently stop working. As for the smartsheild, mybee the short or loose/dirty connection was causing it to prevent the car from starting. Im being very optimistic but I will see how it goes for the next few days. Cheers Mick |

Well the gremlin is still there. Smart sheild is on and I can't start the car.
Is it possible to remove the BEM and unplug it then put back in car without programming anything? I would like to check the plugs. Cheers Mick |

You can pull the BEM and then refit the same unit with no issues. If you replace the BEM with another unit, you will need to get it programmed.

Ok. Cool. Thanks. I will clean them today.
I've just realised that when the smart sheild activates, and I can't start it, the method I use to get it going again is the same. 1. Put the car in neutral 2.push the car so it rolls slowly 3. While it is still rolling, shift it into park. And then the P on the dash appears when I try the ignition again and it allows me to start it?? Maybee there is a faulty sensor in the gearbox?? Cheers Mick |
