Ok... well thats the only thing from gearbox that would stup it from starting..

also check under the dash behind the fuse box. There are 2 loom plugs with a lever lock. Check the are on propetly..

Troyman.
I checked those two plugs. All seems well. What I did notice is that when I remove the 5 amp fuse for the BEM, I get the flashing smart sheild , no display on the dash of what gear it's in and as per normal it won't turn over???
Makes me think that Maybee there is a bad earth wire for the BEM or it is not getting power when my gremlin shows it head?
Any thoughts??
Cheers

I have another BEM on the way. I will get it programmed and see how it goes. I am quite sure that that is where the problem is.
Fingers crossed

when ignition is off & first turned on with fault present what does smartshield light do? 1 flash ,2 flash, flashes fast etc.
do you have 2 keys to program BEM - are they genuine keys ford on them ?non genuine play up and can fail to program to BEM - while your waiting try running your own earth to BEM - does gear indicator show other gears R,N,D etc.

Tedw. The smart sheild light flashes fast. I think the keys are genuine ford but I only have one key for ignition. And when the gear indicator disappears it shows no gear at all.
I don't think it's the key, as the gear indicator disappeared while I was driving on the weekend. Then when it was switched off, and I tried restarting the fault was there.
I can't see any physical earth wire for the BEM.
It is so difficult to pin point where the fault is coming from as it is so random.
But when the fuse is removed for the BEM all of the fault symptoms are present, temp gauge drops out, no gear indicator and smart sheild flashes.
Cheers

On the EF/EL, if the smartlock light is flashing fast then there is an issue with Smartlock. There is no external earth for the BCM, they are earthed within the loom.

I would say from what you are saying, that you have a BCM/Smartlock issue. Maybe this is why the BCM & ECU had been replaced before.

Hey guys.
I got another BCM fitted this afternoon. And as of yet, no trouble. Hopefully that was my issue. I will keep you posted on how it all goes over the next few days.
Cheers

Well it's been bit over a week with no problem. Then when I went to start today, same issue. I am thinking that water may be getting into the electric aerial and shorting the BCM out. I noticed that the aerial works when I put the fuse in for the BCM.

thats because the bcm controles the electric antenna..

I think you have a gremlin in your wiring somwhere

Unfortunately this is the problem with intermittant faults ................

unlikely to be aerial-as troyman said aerial is controled by BEM when you remove fuse and refit you are resetting the BEM - however for peace of mind put aerial up so you have radio reception disconnect power plug to aerial and cover with plastic bag to prevent water entry and retest for fault ............

it is still possible you have a wiring issue or a intermittant fault in Engine computer-instrument cluster audio unit etc check if you notice anything else that fails at fault time other than temp gauge etc....eg.interior light, radio, ac and vents ,rear demister ?
wriggle connection to ECU - try swapping engine relay even if it tests ok

would suggest recheck all earths........

when fault is present are you still able to start by rolling and putting into park ?
have you rechecked for codes , clear codes as they may be introduced from changing components etc. and rescan after fault occurs.......

Well it is day eleven and not a single fault:):) since I removed the fuse to the stereo. The antenna has no power. I will try and get a few weeks and if I don't get a fault I will replace the aerial with a manual one and re connect stereo. Thanks guys. Will keep you posted.

My fault is back. And yes in the rain. I had a better look around and there is water getting inside where the ecu is located. A closer inspection and I think the door rubber has had it. I can see the corner of the windscreen.
Who other than ford replace and fit them? I just know if I go to ford it will cost an arm and a leg.
Cheers

suggest you remove ECU from its mount unplug & blow out all moisture inside and out coat connections with silicon grease on both sides of connector (JayCar etc.) reconnect ECU harness put ECU inside a plastic bag and seal, extend earth wiring & reconnect earth at mounting point and leave ECU unmounted and out of moisture to see if this is causing your fault while you shop for someone to fix leak.

check local mechanic for cost and compare with Ford quote - is there a repco workshop in orange?
is it the door rubber or windscreen that is leaking ?
