AC works when first turned AC on - then 5mins later - it just blows out hot air or outside air. could it be just low Freon? can I buy a diy re-charge kit from somewhere?

I had the same issue, turns out my filter was blocked solid. This has to be replaced by a specialist, there is also a very specific weight of gas that needs to be in the system. Not really a job you can do at home, and no, I am not aware of any DIY recharge kits that can be purchased in Aus.

it sits inside the aircon pipe at the join near the airbox.

if its full of metal shavings then this can block gas flow and compressor shuts down.......... at the same time, if its full of shavings then your compressor has lunched itself or is very close to death anyway

my aircon stopped working as there was a major leak of gas out the front main seal, the mobile aircon guy showed me the guts of the compressor in the filter........ cost $550 for a replacement compressor, filter and regas. :)

have you done the built in self test where the unit resets itself, its a long shot but may be worth a try. Ignition on, then press and hold the two outer buttons (the second row) for a couple seconds then release, you should be able to hear parts moving around and may even should an error code.
