I have an issue with the headlights in that if I turn them on, the fuse blows for both the indicators and the hazard lights – there are 2 separate fuses. Also, when this happens the dash lights go out. Replacing the two fuses restores the indicators and hazard lights and they both work fine until I turn the headlights on again.

Does anyone have any suggestions as the auto electrician seems to be running out of ideas.

you have a short somewhere. maybe check switches on column. indicators/hazards work fine otherwise? has the headlight switch been checked?

Yeah, we figure it has to be a short and the auto electrician reckons he’s checked all the obvious places – not sure if he checked the switches. I have been wondering however, if there is some component that can be causing the problem or is there a known trouble-spot where things like this tend to happen.

Thought I’d put a note on here to say what the problem was. After a hell of a lot of investigation, the auto electrician finally found a wire in the harness that runs down the steering column had (over time) worn the insulation through where it passes a bracket - it was shorting out to the bracket when the lights were switched on. He put some insulation on it and I haven’t had a problem since.
