I have a 97 EL Fairmont that has developed two faults pretty much at the same time.
First the airbag warning code of 32 came up which according to the airbag diagnostics code is Airbag Circuit High Resistance, or Open Circuit. Then I noticed that the cruise control would not turn on. The next day, airbag was still faulting and cruise control could be turned on but would not set / engage at all. Now cruise control won't turn on at all as well as the airbag still showing faulty. My question is, do both these functions run through the BEM? If so, it would explain both faults. Or are they running separate circuits and both these faults occurring at the same time is purely coincidental?

a Faulty clock spring could cause this issue.

Clock spring? I'm sure I've heard of that part before. Is that under the airbag inside the steering wheel itself?

Pretty ignorant of replacement parts availability here but is the clock spring available as new or due to the age of the car, only as second hand?

Talked to Grant Walker parts this arvo and they have S/H clocksprings available with a three month warranty. Tried Burson's and they said they are not aware of anyone doing replacement clocksprings for the EL at all. Shame that as you never know if the S/H clockspring will last for just a few months and die as well.
