Hey guys,

I have a series 3 AU ford Falcon (late 2001) and on the display when I am driving the low coolant light is flashing, the accelerometer is showing full rev and displayed temperature of engine is high. The coolant level is full and the car just went through a full service. Just wondering what steps I can take to rectify this situation.

Your sensor has probably sprung a leak and filled with coolant , remove it and see if it is full . If so simply replace it and voila problem solved .

According to the manual only the V8 models have the sensor - my car is only V6

Incorrect, the coolant alert is standard equipment on all Fairmont, XR, Fairlane models and was optional on all others.
(BTW the Ford 4.0 litre engine is known as an inline (I6) or as some call it long (L6) 6 cylinder. A V6 is 6 cylinders in a V configuration, for example the Holden Ecotec )

This isn't a fairmont, XR or Fairline model though, it is a Falcon forte. Also, if this does have a sensor in it, by cleaning/replacing it will it fix the incorrect temperature gague reading and aceleromter showing full revs?

hi barcode. might be a silly question, but does your cluster have a oil pressure. gauge and volt gauge., and also in the coolant bottle is there a low coolant sensor. If the sensor isnt there thats your problem

As above, it would have been optioned when the car was bought new.


The coolant level sensor is located on the side of the plastic expansion tank where you put the coolant in. The temperature sensor is located on the side of the thermostat housing (Round topped alloy thing the top radiator hose attaches to on the front of the engine) So no, one failing will not affect the other... as long as your coolant level is ok.

If you're having strange issues with more than 1 gauge on the instrument cluster I'd advise removing it and checking the contacts on the plugs and connectors for corrosion or not making proper contact. My Ex's EF had this issue and that's what was causing it, a quick hit with contact cleaner and making sure the connections were firm solved it.
