First thing to check is that the relays and circuit breaker are working correctly.

As above, check relays.
If they all tun off instantly when you flick to high, then it won't be the circuit breaker. It takes a short amount of time to warm up before it cuts out. It is a genuine XR, or a front end conversion? What happens if you pull the stalk to flash the lights? Anything? nothing? |

replace the CB under the overflow bottle. 99.9% of the time this is the cause of the issue, its a cheap item and easy job to do. If you wanted to correctly diagnose it, you can pull it open, and get a mate to flick your high beams on and off, if it does not move its cactus, if it moves but instantly overloads, its cactus. if nothing happens, good chance its cactus.

Yea so it's 100% an xr but its had an ef to el front end change. the circuit breaker I have changed didn't do anything and when I pull the indicator stalk to flash the high beam the lows stay on but the highs don't come on and the little blue light doesn't turn on in the dash...I can't figure out where the relay is for the high beam only can find the low beam relay cheers

Sounds like either the high beam relay is buggered, or a wire in the indicator stalk may have broken, like the problem they have with BAs.
High beam relay should be next to the low beam relay. |

I'll try the relay 1st because I had a bloke stuff around with
the relays and change them coz they were corroded and now they don't and thats when the problem started |

The low beam relay should be a blue 5-pin relay.

When you say a blue 3 way relay is that 5 pin or 4 ? Because I'm thinking its not an xr now because its only got the blue 5 pin for lows and then either side its just a 4 pin

Yep, that's how they are. Blue is only for the lows.

Are the lows relay just a normal 4 pin or are they another ford genious idea?

It's been mentioned, the low beam relay for an XR is a blue 5-pin relay.
