in your answers can you please describe thing and where to find them

XR8 - Sounds like you used the wrong relay. From memory, you need a changeover relay (where 87, and 87a arent switched together) so that when High beam isnt on, low beam is.

There are two kinds of 5 pin relay - one where 87 and 87a are connected, and one where one is on in the off position, and the other in the on position. thats the kind you need

As per this link -> http://www.paulhunt73.webspace.virginme ... relay4.jpg

You probably have something similar to S8, but need something like S5

thanks, I've had a look and I only have one relay with five prongs, the replacement is as you described an s8. I've taken a couple of pic's of where the relays are and fuse box. the blue one is the five prong one and its says accy relay and is the original relay, I haven't put the new one in yet as it is a 4 prong one, I take it the blue one is the one that needs changing?

No - these arent the relays we are talking about.

You have more relays in the engine bay - some Underneath the overflow bottle and some near the battery

You should probably start with a copy of the ford manual.

The Third Post in this thread ->
post1422137.html

Shows you the relays next to the battery. I believe the XR Relay may be different - a 5 pin, like the S5

low beam relay is a change over relay (terminals marked 85-86-87-87A-30) located along inner gaurd near battery under plastic cover -low beam should be second from front hi beam third from front

alright well i've done this so far, got a mate who knows his stuff to have a look, change relays no luck low beam still not working. mate pull relay bank up to check underneath, he bridged the high beam to low beam and got low beam working by itself. however we would like top know what the colour codes are for the wiring as the manual does not have the colour code for the wiring and this make reading the electrical maps a bit hard. in the pic my mate bridged the purple n white of high beam to the solid purple of low beam and this got the low beam working by itself

thanks mate, you don't happen to have it for a ef xr8, I do have the schematic's in my repair manual, I'm really after the colour code chart so I can identify the wires

Those purple/white wires are supply into the rely... Did bridging them out make the low beams come on with the headlight switch and work like normal... Parkers on parkers, low beams and parkers on low... All lights on high?

Those two purple/white wires should already be bridged together in the loom...

Pull the relays out and test each of the purple/white brass pins in the base with a test lamp... Both should glow irrespective of key on or off... Lead on the test light hooked to ground...

Cheers,
Tim

also possibly check the earth side of the low beam relay as the actual low beam side may not actually be working ...... if i read this factory page right - inner headlight is single filament with outers double filament
