My Fairmont is stuck for the last 3 weeks. I removed the dash for wire inspection had some odd failures. No repairs were required no wires chafed. Upon replacing the dash all systems work accept the car will not start. Starter motor does not turn. Nothing was replaced. The car did not have problems starting before the removal off the dash. Same key as before. Did the following:
1. Left the car switched on for the 60 minutes. No joy. 2. Short circuit the starter relay - the starter operates and motor turns. So the problem must be ignition. 3. Tried to purchase a BEM (Green) - but according to Ford South Africa part is obsolete. Is there any way the BEM can be bypassed for the above problem? Problems previously experienced: 1. Trunk lid will not unlock for the switch on the dash - solenoid did function when power applied. 2. Central locking were driving me nuts by operating 100 times while driving. 3. Horn was inoperative. How can I get my back on the road again? Jan |

Doesn't matter - the Australian 2000 equivalent would be a 1.5 or 2, so it's most likely Smartshield.
I'm guessing he hasn't reconnected the transponder/smartshield 5 pin plug at the steering column base.

Thanks for support.
It is definitely smart lock. Key same as top one in figure provided. The interior roof light does not work. All other interior lights are working. Checked fuses with special attention to radio and BEM 5A fuses. All OK. Reconnect all BEM connectors still no go. Red lights lit when ignition key is turned. Something peculiar though - the flashing light for smart lock referred to in manual does not aluminate. The car is automatic. Tried to start in both park and neutral. All connectors rechecked. |

have you noticed a smartlock light before as not all AU's had one -if it did have one recheck all fuses with a test light across each end of fuse-
if other interior lights work fuse for this is not problem - have you checked that ignition switch plug AND key reader plug are both connected at steering column - check for power at ignition coil and injectors - do the following items work - heater fan - blinkers - wipers -radio - dash warning lights & gauges - stop lights - electric windows is there or was there an alarm or cut out switch fitted - ? are you able to scan for fault codes - ? key on (reds) how many power feeds to starter relay -? check battery voltage with multimeter check connections to back of fuse box are secure and all earths are connected |

Thanks TedW.
It turned out to be Key reader plug not seating properly. Once the connection was made the car started after the 61 min period. No problem since. I am sure my car does not have smartlock light fitted as I did not notice it before. Thanks everybody for your help it is appreciated. |
