Got an NF, 4.0 litre. Just the other day, I jumped in, and noticed the Trip Computer was stuck on 12:27 Fri 8th. No month shown. Figured it may be the heat, been hot in SA, but, when I got out of the car, the t/c was still lit up. Even with the ignition off, doors locked, keys in my pocket. Stays on all night.! Tried the fuses, tapped it lightly, pushed all 3 buttons in a variety of sequences, Nothing happens....still at 12:27 hours.
Any ideas?? ![]() Car is stock as a rock, 260k, 4WD ride height, cassette player etc etc. |

Disconnect the battery for a few hours. That usually resets everything (including the ECU, there's a process involved in getting the ECU to relearn properly. From memory it's something like idle for 2 mins out of gear with A/C off, the 2 mins out of gear with A/C on, 2 mins in gear A/C off 2 mins in gear A/C on. Someone else could probably confirm or deny the accuracy of my memory
![]() If that doesn't work it may be time for a new t/comp.. possibly the display has bleed or something.

Sounds like the display has cooked itself! If it doesn't respond to anything including the buttons. I have seen a dead gauge cluster screen, so its possible. Can't see how else it would still show up without power. Theres a fuse that should kill it, smartlock it may be called.
I have a spare here I can sell you for $20 if you like, grey with black buttons. Just offering. |

Pop the dash surround off and unplug it, see what that does. Bit of a weird one!

Anyone confirm this ? Have done a heap of things in the last week. Rebooting the ECU may be a good idea. Changed out the steering rack, the power steering pump, Ignition leads and Coil pack. About 2 weeks ago, got a second hand exhaust which is 2.5", I guess all of this could be cause for a reboot. Does anyone have the exact series of steps to reboot the ECU ?? (NF I6 Auto 1996) |

Disconnect the battery for a few minutes. Thats it.
It will sort out its own idle after a few drives, no need for funny procedures. Make sure you have the stereo code first if the original is still in it. |

Or you could do that, but I have noticed that by doing it this way the idle takes a while to settle itself and the trans also seems to take longer to figure out when it wants to shift. I guess the point of the process I posted before is to get the ECU used to different loads. But it's up to you, and yes... get the code for the stereo 1st if you need it ![]() Edit.. Also the ECU will need about 30-60 mins with the battery disconnected to reset... not just a few minutes.
