G'day,
I have installed a rectangular trailer plug to my AU2 (Forte). I'm not sure if the wiring is correct as I was going on the colours from another vehicle. I do not have a trailer to check to see if the wiring is correct. Is there any way of checking / testing to see if the wiring is correct using a mulitmetre or similar? I have a Digitech Cat QM-1500 tester. Never came with operating instructions See image of Digitech tester Perhaps someone who is familiar with this device can let me know what setting to use. This might help. Trailer plugs are a standard. Get someone to switch the indicators, brake and tail light to make sure a voltage shows on your multimeter...stick the negative to the earth pin and just probe the positive on the pin you want to check on. Can also use a probe test light.

EDIT 2: Regarding the multimeter...I am pretty sure you use the 20V DC setting (point the dial to 20 on the left side of the circle). That should give you a reading when you test each light. I used a LED test light probe and when a signal is found the probe lights up...socket can only put out 12V so 20V setting is more than enough for a reading.

Hello phongus,
Thanks mate, I appreciate your help on this topic. I'll gest someone to switch the indicators, brakes and tail lights. I have two wires, one is black, the other red. I assume the red wire is power + and the black as negative I have three inserts to choose for these wires but not sure which one goes where. Top Hole reads 10A DC 2nd Hole down reads V? mA with 750V AC 1000V AC and 200mA MAX in red writing 3rd Hole reads COM 500V MAX in red writing. Would the black lead plug into the COM hole and Red lead plug into the 10A DC Hole? Cheers, Peter |

Black lead goes into common.
Red leads goes into V , Ohms and mA socket. 10A DC is for using it as an amp meter which will create a short circuit. You dont want that.

I forget to ask this question.
When testing wires on the vechicle's trailer plug using a multimeter, is the earth lead from the multimeter grounded to a metal part of the car or does it go to the earth wire within the plug? I dont have a trailer to check to see if the wires are correctly wired up or have power, hence the use of multimeter. I have never used a multimeter previously, hence the question. Cheers |

I always use the earth at the plug. That way it makes sure yoi have earth there.

G'day again,
I've done a check on trailer plug wires using the multimeter, everything seems to have power. The Reversing Lights socket is a bit susc. I get a reading of 0.03 volts. Would this reading indicate a short or not a good connection somewhere? I had checked the screws holding the wires in position, they look a bit rusty so I'm going to replace these with Stainless Steel. Cheers |

check the voltage at the wire when the plug is apart. if it is still low, i'd say you have a break in the wire

I pulled the plug apart today and tested the Reversing wire for power with a multimeter, reading returned 0.00 v
I'll be removing the lining covering the boot sides / floor to gain acess to the trailer wiring loom. Obviously there is a break in the wire somewhere. Does anyone know if Ford has a wiring harness with snap in connectors already wired as factory standard? I purchased this car probably 3rd hand, looks like the wires have been played with.
