Hi all. This is my first post here so appologise if it's in the wrong spot.
Just yesterday I purchased an NA Fairlane which is in near new condition inside and only a couple of small dents on the outside, and it only has 113,000km on the odo. so as you can imagine I was very happy to only pay $600 for it. The problem: now the only problem I've had with the car is a little worrying. The check suspension light was on constantly when I drove it home, but I didn't seem to drive funny or anything so I thought it may have been a faulty sensor or something. After a quick 2 minute test drive there was a fair amount of smoke pouring out of the right rear wheel arch, and by the smell of it, it was distinctly electrical. But now the check suspension light has gone off for the first time since I've had the car. Does anyone have any idea what it could be? Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

I'm pretty sure the only thing electrical around the rear wheels would be the ABS or maybe the self leveling suspension. Check your not leaking brake fluid too

From what I have been told ( by the mechanic I purchased an Nc 5L off a few years ago) the self leveling suspension was a waste and expensive to replace/ repair and the best bet was to throw it over your shoulder and just go for a " traditional" suspension setup

Apart from a small oil leak nothing is leaking. Breaks are working fine as well.
What's the cost in getting rid of the self-leveling? I pretty sure the suspension is the problem as e lights gone off now. |

Depends on your skills. Do it yourself with lows off ebay for under $700 for the entire suspension front and rear with new shocks and springs..... but if you have to pay someone to do it I have no idea what the going rate is sorry

If you dont have a manual I have one of those cd versions I used on the Nc, will work for you and I can copy it and post it down to you if you want. Save you a little cash anyway. The manual cover Ea to Ed, Na to Nc

Is it a necessity to have the auto leveling working? The cars been drivin since and it doesn't seem any different really?
I've never dealt with this system before, so appologies for a daft question. |

Nah I don't have a manual, so that would be immensely appreciated if you could do that for me.

Neither had I and luckily it was removed before I purchased the Nc. I dont know if its got to be connected but I think the plug for the rears near the diff. A good look and you should find it, if the suspension light comes on just remove the cluster and take the globe out.

Ok, so I took it for another drive and I'm now 99% sure it's nothing suspension wise. I'm pretty sure it's actually the hand break thats stuck on.
Whilst driving it, it felt as though the breaks were on ( pulling up quickly with no breaks applied ). I pulled into a driveway and the rear right wheel locked as I turned ( thank god its been raining today or else it might of takin ages to figure out. ). So yeah I'm pretty sure it's a stuck hand break.. Now I just need to figure out how to fix it :-/ |

Would dare say its been sitting for a while then and brakes as known for sticking when not in use. At least its not too an expensive fix then. Cant remember the exact setup but I am sure its a brake shoe for the handbrake on each wheel. Might just be a stuck spring or something. Have a look as Ill drop that manual in the mail for you and worst case you have a look and if you cant figure it out then you'll have the manual soon. Also check here for Na stuff, there is a Lane build thread on here thats good for mod idea's too. I miss my old Lane. I called it the love boat... One big heavy v8 arm chair

Pull the SLS and throw it over the left shoulder.
Replace with standard shocks. The SLS is just an automatic set of air shocks anyway. s**t idea. The handbrake on the early box cars is in the calipers. It holds the pads against the disc. Start checking that the handbrake and caliper slides are releasing.
