That is the one.
Make sure you don't earth it out, it will be interesting if you do . |

96ELGli,
I've done the two readings at 6.25pm 1st reading with probes on both battery poles reads 12.83v 2nd reading with one probe on negative battery terminal and one probe on Alternator cable, also reads 12.83v |

Thanks mate, I made sure it was not earthed out |

Was the Alternator reading with the car running?
If not, it is the same as doing the 2 terminals on the battery. You need to test it with the car running to get a charging reading. Battery voltage at 12.8v without the car running is good. |

SWC,
Oh, sorry mate, was not aware I needed to have the engine running. Will do a volt reading on it shortly. I assume one probe on the Alternator wire and the other probe on the negative battery pole? I'll let you know what the reading is Cheers |

Hello,
It is main cable that goes to the battery, yes. Cables can sometimes have a high resistance connection, which why you need to test at the Alternator. If you test between the Alternator and Battery, there should be no Volts. If there is feel all the connections, a hot one has resistance. A mate had trouble starting his Car and felt the Battery leads, burnt his fingers on the bad one !

Ok,
Just done a reading on the volts with engine running. Using the Alternator wire, reading was scattered from low 13.18v then went to 14.20 volts and at times as low as 12.85v Had identical readings using battery terminals. Switched engine off, voltage reading is 12.90v. Not keen in testing wires with bare hands though, had one electrical shock in the past, not keen of having another thanks. |

Sounds like there is a fault with the Alternator. Shouldn't drop that low.

SWC,
I'm sort of wondering if that alternator might be playing up. A few times I've noticed a drop in power of the interior fan speed. I had it set on highest number 4 , gradually ran less speed as if it was on setting 1 then out of the blue it ran full blast then very slowly again. That was happening on and off a few times prior to latest issue. I do know this alternator did have some power steering fluid inside of it, until I replaced the power steering pump. Not game enough to drive at night as it is until problem fixed. Might be time to get another Alternator from the wreckers as a temp measure and get a brand new one when I'm more financial. Got a few medical appointments coming up from next week. |

you can use a BA one as well, same unit.

Hi,
It does sound like the Alternator, better to be sure than throw parts at it on a hunch. It sounds like it was out for a while which flattened the battery, you are lucky it kicked back in when it did. And not stuck on the side of the road !

SWC,
Thanks for letting me know BA Alternator is same for AU2. 96ELGli, Sounds very much like the alternator. Yes, sure am lucky, especially when I went for 420klm round trip drive the week before. Sure would be a problem if stuck on the side of road. Thanks to you and SWC for providing me with advice / guidance. Cheers |

Update,
I had two problems, a faulty alternator as it been contaminated with oil again, this was causing the voltage regulator to screw up, also checked with an electronic gadget from a battery supplied, not only does give read out on CCA but also ohms, and percentage of battery charge. The battery itself was also stuffed. 2 Cells are knackered. Bench tested another alternator from the wreckers (after being sprayed with circuit book cleaner) and tested good, no issues. Never took the alternator apart to see what condition the bushes are or slip ring. At least the alternator from the wreckers will get me out of trouble temporarily. I'll be placing an order for a new alternator in about 2 weeks time. Cheers. |

Hello,
They seem to go forever if they dont get PS fluid in them. What we need is a Metal plate to make the fluid run down behind the Alternator. It would be extra cost to make them that way, only a problem as the Car ages. Not a warranty issue by then.

96ELGli,
Would be good idea to have it designed like that or have a complete radically new design of the engine. True, that PS fluid is the culprit. According to the people who bench tested the alternator said its a common problem with AU's in general. If that's the case I wonder how later models escape the problem or is it the case later models are not reported as much? Hand to dig deep in the pocket again.. bugger. rego due next month too. What bad timing. |
