Few days ago, the top cover case that covers the electronic switches on the cruise control had broken and can not be glued back.
I've taken another Steering Wheel with assembly of wrecked AUII. Questions are:- 1. Can I just change over (replace) the damaged unit with the other one? 2. Do I need to replace the entire steering wheel with all of its sundries? What precautionary steps (measures) do I need to take before attempting this job? Thanks, Peter |

A- no ... no need to What precautionary steps (measures) do I need to take before attempting this job? A- disconnect battery & leave alone for 5/10 minutes, before removing steering wheel airbag. once airbag is removed you can change controls over. don't remember what the tool was called to remove airbag bolts - it's a specific tool. Before I go ahead and make a C**k up of the steering wheel, does anyone know what the special tool is that's required to remove top part of steering hub to access cruise control assembly switch?
Don't want the airbags to explode. |

Disconnect the battery for 5 mins and then remove the airbag. You will then be able to access the cruise control buttons.

You'll need a Torx anti-tamper bit to remove the two screws holding the horn pad/air bag. These are located on either side of the steeting wheel, closest to the steering colum behind some plactic plugs. To save using the Torx bit again, a slot is cut in each screw so I can use a flat bladed screwdriver later. Carefully unplug the airbag after that (keeping your face away from it ).
Have you got a steering wheel puller? There are two holes to attach the puller to the steering wheel to. It won't come off easily otherwise.

Thanks, I waited an hour to be doubly safe. ******************************************************************************** Shortshift, I did manage to find a 5 star Torx bit. T30. Good idea about making a slot. Might do that. After looking at the wiring of the switches underneath the airbag on my AUII, the other wiring loom still attached to the spare steering wheel is slightly different. It came off a Ford, which model I could not say, I assumed all Ford Steering wheels were the same but apparently not so. I then realised , yep, steering wheel has to come off prior to removing the screws attaching the casting of the wheel to the plastic so as to gain access to remove and replace wiring harness. What brand or make of steering wheel puller would do the job? Cheers |

Is the new wheel off an AU?
You don't need a puller. Loosen the torx bolt holding the sttering wheel on. Do Not Remove the bolt totaly but loosen off a few turns. Grap the wheel at 12 an 6 o'colock and pull/rock the wheel. It should come loose. |

Cheers i'd hazard a guess & say it's an EF/EL if the switches are differant. steering wheels easy to take off. just do as SWC said & you will be fine. and yes the wheels are differant |

Thanks for the further info and type of steering wheel pulley required. There is a subtle difference with the wiring harness in the two steering wheels. In the AUII, I have cruise control buttons on the right side and radio buttons on the left ( Seek, + and -). No horn buttons , yet the horn works if you press the central hub. The other steering wheel has horn buttons on left and right side, cruise control buttons normal but is wired into the radio button on left side that only has two switches as opposed to three switches on the AUII. Another question. Does the airbag really need to be replaced? Why I ask...writing on the back of the airbag enclosure said words to the effect "Replace after 10 years". Vehicle built 2000, now its 2016. Any truth to this or still good as gold? Cheers. |

By your description, the steering wheel is off an EF/EL and are cruise control switches only. Left side is On/Off and right side is Set + - etc.
Air bag should be fine. |

You are correct about the switches, so yes, it must have been off an EF/EL, did not take notice of the model at the time. I've already thrown it away. I'll be doing so next week when I obtain the proper one from an AUII. Thanks for letting me know about the Airbag. Cheers |

Update,
Went to wreckers to find if there were any intact steering wheels without wires cut...wishful thinking on my part. Managed to locate couple of AUII vehicles, one was same year as mine, the other a year later. Wires have been cut from the switches. Without causing hiccups, can wires be joined and soldered for those switches? Unfortunately the steering wheel does need to come off to get access to the wires that run between the plastic backing and the metal part of the steering wheel Cheers |
