Hey all. My second post on the forums! I would like to know more about the thermistor for the thermo fan, as I am almost 100% certain my low speed fan isn't working, I've switched the relays around but with no results. I pulled it out and it looked a bit average, the green stuff on the ceramic was not on the edge due to wear and tear probably. The car has done 170,000km and I'm thinking the thermistor is stuffed.
Does anyone have any ideas or had this issue before and what they did? Thanks in advance guys. |

Also If I'm to replace the thermo fan do I get the single fan or dual fan one, it currently has a single fan.

Hello,
Have a look here. ford-technical-document-thermo-fan-wiring-d54 It is from the Tech Doc Tab above. The Fans are run from the ECU, both together from the ECU. Normally you will get an error if one fails. Low speed they are in series, and high speed parallel. My EL and others have had the fans not run at high speed, a reset of the ECU has fixed this. ( disconnect the battery ) How high does the Temp gauge go ?

Hey there.
The high speed fan works fine. The temp gauge has never gone above the Just before mid point, except when I just finished towing and had the car turned off then started it again a few minutes later. (I think that's because the coolant sits in the head, happened on my VR commie) Im thinking of sticking a pin where the relay goes to test it but I'm unsure what contacts to make a connection. |

Hello,
If the power connection to 1 fan is burnt, neither will run on low, and only 1 fan will run on high. Both Fans should run together. A faulty relay can also cause similar issues.

As I said my car one has ONE thermo fan. I tested the low speed by making the circuit with the relay removed so Im betting it is the Thermistor.

Hello,
I have not seen only 1 fan, all that I have seen is 2. Because of the radiator shape, 2 will work better. They may have done something strange to vary the speed, or it is a thermostat to start / stop the fan. How many relays are there for the Fan ?

It has 2 relays, there is a 3rd relay spot but says (Where fitted) I assume that would be for if the car has 2 thermo fans. My thermo fan looks like {DESCRIPTION}
The low speed fan should be turned on by the ECU and then the fan SPEED is varied by a device (Thermistor) behind the fan shroud where that plug sits. high speed fan is just one speed when the ECU wants it on. Thats how I understand it. |

Hello,
It seems they made some with a variable speed module, and another relay to run it flat out when needed. A thermistor is like the water temp sender. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermistor My EL and BF and the GF's BA are all 2 fan, I have never seen a 1 fan before. The ECU controls the fans in my EL, 2 signals. 1 turns the fans on and the other runs them on high.

Are you talking about the Territory /BF Single Fan? - Or Dual Fans.
The Dual Fans do NOT have a thermistor. The ECU Senses Engine Temp using the same sender as the Instrument Cluster (More accurately, the ECU Tells the cluster the temp), so if the cluster is reading temp, then the ECU is getting it right, and there is no problem with the temp sensor. .. Which takes you back to the Relays and or wiring. On SOME models, there is a Single Thermo Fan instead of a Dual one, and there is a Thermistor type setup for Heat sensing on low speed only. It looks like a small coil, and is inside the shroud. Again, this is ONLY on the single fan models. BUT, the ECU controls the Fan speed in exactly the same way as above - I think there is one less relay. Thats the whole difference. I assume because your talking about them, that you have dual fans. Youve been given correct diagnosis for them already. Check the relays. They often fail as they do take on high currents. Nigel |

Hi Nigel thanks for the info but I'm 100% certain my car has the single fan setup with 2 relays and the coil to control the fan speed (low) I believe the coil is buggered.

Its easy to check. Open bonnet, look at Fan.
Its either one big one in the centre, or their are two fans. The Thermister module is replacable I believe. |

Don't worry I know the car has one big fan and the coil is replaceable.

Nigel,
It seems to be a 1 fan car. From what I understand it may be an alternative to the 2 fan system, and uses the same 2 control signals. With 1 less relay. The device near the shroud may be a switch mode device which can vary the speed. There is a link to another post which is worth a look.
