I am trying to eliminate this as a symptom of my starting issues , it doesn't make sense that the clutch should engage at ignition on, something is telling it to do it and it's not me..

ok thanks Troyman, I hadn't seen it before, but should it stay on as it's cranking or disengage, if it seems like extra drain on starting system, dont want to harp on about it but maybe its failed the circuit testing and is supposed to point me to the problem.

It seems to stay on untill the ecu gets a pip/spark signal from the dizzy.. so it would be on on the first few rotations of the engine. . It shouldn't cause any extra strain on starting system..
I sometimes start my car with fan and aircon on and it dont cause starting issues. |

I haven't had a chance to do all basic checks, but from your answer I went straight to the PIP wire on the distributor module today ( second from bottom) to check for pulse at cranking no pulse, and aircon clutch stayed engaged while cranking... also no spark from coil to double check..
Then I used an old working distributor, put the module plug in, ignition on, earthed the dizzy and spun the old dizzy by hand and I got pulse and the clutch disengaged.. so either module or hall sensor problem will swap dizzy tomorrow. to see if theory correct.. |

the tfi module on the dizzy is a common thing to fail..
