I thought I would activate the Diagnostic dash mode on my EL the other day as I was getting low on fuel and didn't know exactly how low as being a GLI and all I dont have the Trip and Fuel display. So anyway I pressed the button until I got to the Fuel mode at No7. So I find I am running at about 20litreas left So I think f**k it I will go to the Servo and fill it up all the way. I click off twice at the Bowsar and go pay for it come back and to go drive away and I notice that the Fuel reading has gone up to 74litres instead of what I thought would be 68litres. Could I have a bigger fuel tank than normal or is the reading out

the only thing i could find 68 litres, sedan; 72 litres, wagon

i'm guessing the fuel level part of the dash needs recalibrating.....

well, if it said 20 litres, how much did you put in for it to say 74? if you put in 54 litres, well that answers your question.. lol.
They should all work of the fuel sender but, the fuel guage, and the diag thingy... and thats a resistor based float in your fuel tank, unless its different in sedans? Cheers

I always manage to put in about 70 to 74 litres in my Fairmont Ghia.
I think 68 litres is a normal full load but there would be air space left. If you keep filling up slowly and getting rid of the air space then you could fit in 74 litres. You shouldnt fill it more than 68 because that leaves enough room for fuel expansion on a hot day so it wont try to vent. I fill it above 68 litres because I'm using about 4 litres to get home from the BP servo so I can Ultimate 98. |

i would guess that the dash is wrong
i have a Gli wagon and when i fill it all the way up the dash reads 63 litres. |

Well I filled it up again for the" ESK "Cruise today and it still said 74 Litres again for a Full tank. So when I filled it up it said I had 25 litres left in the tank and then I put in 43.19 litres. Which adds up to "68 Litres " So I think something is screwy with the Diagnostics as it still keeps saying this figure of 74litres again when in fact their was only physically 68 litres in the tank

Thats odd as my 96 EF I6 GLi can only shows a maximum of 68 litres in diagnostics mode even if i fill up the spout to overflow. The station pump obviously measures all the fuel in the tank and on my feet which at times is more than the 68 litre maximum
When i used a decade resistance box to replace the sender for testing my fuel gauge, the fuel level shown in diagnostics mode was no more than 68 litres. Cheers. |

Yeah I am still trying to get to the bottom of this 74Litre thing

I've put 85L into my wagon on several occasions.
The dash diagnostics were never there for consumer use, so I guess they dont need to reflect the absolute truth

Most I've managed to put in was a bowser reading of 72.19L.
Mayb we've got 'BAR Honda' style surge tanks

yeh i filled um mine the other day and only got 59L o wouldnt trust what that diagnostic thing tells you
