Anyone know if there's much difference between a 1N5404 and 1N5408 diode? The wiring diagram says 1N5404, but a 1N5408 was supplied - I'm woundering if it's safe to use...
Also, on the wiring diagram, the symbol for a diode is a triangle and a line. Does the silver band stripe of the diode go on the same side as the line on the diagram is?

from memory, stripe is 'negative end', or the output end

Output end, that's where the line is on the diagram, the triangle points in the direction that the current flows.

Turns out the difference is the 5408 is rated for 1000 volts while the 5404 only 600. So it's fine to use as everything else is the same.

:D The diode silver band is the positive end or anode end and you are correct in what you say
