Hi guy,just found this forum and realised that there are some pretty clued up people on here.

I've started changing my upper idler pulley on my AU fairlane ghia 6 because it was quite noisy. Have undone the two screws that surround it but am pretty much f**k from there....

Is anyone able to tell me how to get it off from here

There are 3 x 10mm headed bolts that hold it on....1 is under where you can't see it....use a mirror on a stick, and you'll see what I mean.

To clarify what cjh is saying...

These go through into oil too I think cjh? Need thread sealer to prevent and oil leak running down the timing case?

Which Idler pully are you trying to remove?

If your car is VCT there is also one on the drivers side of the VCT Unit.

As you have removed 2 bolts, I am assuming that you are trying to remove the tensioner assembly (the 2 pully set up). As CJH has said, there are 3 bolts. See below

And here is the VCT idler that SWC is talking about... Item 8 on the lower image... If fitted with VCT...

Thanks guys for all the help. I found the third bolt but I decided not to replace the pulley anyhow as i wasn't aware of the lower wheel and was only sold the top one. Thanks SCA.

I do have a VCT engine but was just going to replace the passenger side wheels as that's where it seems the noise is coming from.

You can replace one at a time if you wish. While you have the tensioner off, spin the other pulley and see if it is noisy.

True but since it's a bit of a fkhole to get off I'd rather just replace them both for the extra $23.

Will tackle it tomorrow when the missus is at wk and I have more time to f@rt around

Yeah.....I use Loctite 567 pipe thread sealant for the bolt threads.

Hmmm, there was no thread sealer on when I took these off so i put them back on without any and there hasn't been any leaks (i dont think).

Perhaps it's just the outer bolt that needs it, will make sure i put them back in with it next time.

Hey guys, so i bit the bullet and replaced the top wheel to see if that was the problem.... It wasn't, oh well. I've tried a couple of places since to get the other two wheels but can't seem to find them. Can anybody recommend anywhere that might have them in stock?

You can tell where the noise is coming from with a big screw driver...

You jam the end of the screw driver on the bolt head or near the middle of the pulley where possible and being careful not to slip and get tangled in the belt you put your ear hard against the end of the handle... If you have something noise you'll soon find it... You can even hear when your bearings go dry and notchy...

EBay has everything... If the pullies are steel you just get the bearing pressed out and a new one pressed in...

Cheers for that, I think replacing the bearing might be the way to go so will give that a shot later if i can get hold of a second car. LoL.

Cheers dude, all good now though. I ended up giving them to the mechanic that serviced my injectors. He got me a new wheel on one and replaced bearing in the other. Took it all home and put all bac together and injectors in. Now it runs sweet and quiet love it
