2 options:

1. AU engine using EA log manifold and accessories (ie only the AU head and block) - can the EA ECU run this (after changing from coil pack to EA dizzy)?

2. I buy an AU ECU (dunno how i'll find a 5 speed one but i'll give it a go...) and plug it in - run the engine with bbm off the AU ECU. Do i need smartlock bypass module? Or Smartshield i remember reading somewhere?

cheers

if you use your ea manifold, dizzy you can use your EA ecu. it will work fine.
if you want to use the bbm manifold its easier to use an EL mainfold keep your dizzy and use an EL ecu but with this option you will need to add a few wires and a smartlock bypass.
if you want to use the AU ecu you will need to modify and add a series 1 AU loom, smartlock bypass, coil packs ect..

personally i would go with the EL manifold, ecu and smartlock bypass..

go the EL ecu and smartlock bypass, the performance benefits over the EA ecu outweigh the cost

just so you know..
the ea accesories are not a direct fit onto the au engine...

aha troyman i have printed out, highlighted, and made notes on your write up, cheers for that it really helps. I understand they won't all fit but the fabrication to make it all fit doesn't seem overly difficult. I'd prefer an EL engine as it is more a direct swap but I can pick up an AU one cheap with lower kms i might as well go it.

Is the EL ecu really remapped that much in that it offers much better performance?

also read somewhere that the EL ECU has circles where the EA one has squares or something similar, how to get through that problem?

thanks for the support...

the EL does give decent performance benefits over the EA ecu, it is definately noticable.
The EL ecu will plug straight into the EA and operate, with the use of a smartlock bypass.
