Well 99% of the literature i read details EA-F wiring, however EL wiring for the trans is difrent with no connector to the injection loom, its all one piece.
Currently i have the auto inhibitor switch (located in N) pluged into the 4pin plug on the end of the auto loom, however the car seems to be in LHM. No doubt as a lack of trans temp sender. I know i need to use a resistor to trick the ECU to think the temp is ok. However is riging the inhibitor switch up enough? or do I still have to put another resistor in to put the car into "neutral" The pics and descriptions i have seen only give pics of EA-F looms and not of El looms. Anyone done this? Cheers

just get a manual ECU like me
Are you going MS?

Has anyone ever done a detailed guide for auto to manual ecu tricking?
It would make a great doco or sticky, because so many people need help with it. Me, I'm not even sure if I did mine right because the thermos always stay on |

If your thermos stay on the gearbox temp is not connected. A 5c resistor will fix the prob. But the ecu wont know if the g/box is getting to hot, unless you have an EA which is running a seperate g/box controller.

Hehe, nah I've done all that. But whether I've done it properly is another matter. I seemed to be measuring all the right voltages.

Voxace, Yes I spent a long time with the ecu and hundreds of resistors getting the voltages right for everything.
What codes do you get if you run an ECU test. That may show you something. If I remember correctly there are at leat four codes for the fans.

If I can be bothered I'll run the diagnostics tomorrow.
If I can remember correctly, I placed a resistor between 12v and the required wire on the ECU, so pin 30 for trans position, and 42 for trans temp. I then measured the voltage between pin 30 or pin 42 and ground to make sure they were at the right voltage. Cheers. |

I think you will find that the inputs are active that is they have a voltage at the input and you need to pull the voltage down to the required level. that may be y u are having a problem.

Well I might have done it that way, it was done several months ago I really need to check it lol.
In that case, it would be resistors between pin 30/42 and ground yeah? |

Yes I am pretty sure thats it, I will try and find my paperwork and let you know asap

voxace wrote: Well I might have done it that way, it was done several months ago I really need to check it lol. The factory setup uses pin 46 as earth for both, so just check that it is indeed a short to earth.

You might try a 10k pot and insert it between pin 30 and earth and adjust it to give 2.3-2.7v (trans in drive), then measure the resistance and get a fixed resistor to suit. Ensure your resistor is a close tolerance one. Same deal with the trans temp line (pin 42), insert the pot and adjust til the fans stop (if they do). Get a fixed resistor as above. Both resistors and pot testing can be done at the ECU plug. This is all theory, but it is what I'll do when I do mine in about a couple months time.

Sounds cool. Ahhh the effort though lol....
I'd love to hear from people who are running thermos successfully from an EL ECU in an EB-ED. What exactly did you do? |

thought i would revive this thread to find an answer
also what happens in LHM with a manual? If you have the clutch fan will there be any problems running an auto ecu in a manual car? |

OK Now , i have successfully done this ,
Low rpm - Low Thermo fans speeds - i will tommorow look for and take fotos of what resistors to use and wires to join them to as i have placed the resistors into the plug that goes into the box , the only thing i havent done yet is wire up reverse lights i will doing this mod to a fairmont ghia soon as the customer still wants to reatain all the fairmont options from the ECU . Stay tuned Dave

Tidy work dave.... we'll politely ask greg to whip it into a doco maybe?? Certainly an important piece of documentation....
