Ig you want something a little more user friendly (but don't generally allow these kinds of 'mods' to be made) have a look at PCMSCAN or ProScan.
I still use hyperterminal for the reading and writing to the cluster (as the above tools don't let you change away from the PCM).

Wow !! Great stuff .
For what its worth Jaycar have an OBD 11 scan tool listed in their cataloge along with a special note that they are tired of being a free hire centre & know its a good product so no long accept returns under their satisfaction guarantee. So I think maybe its worth checking out one of their many shop soiled returns . Cheers AUTOGAS SYSTEMS |

auMatt and I are working separately on software that will work with the ELM and is specific to the BA/BF/SX/SY.
You'll struggle to find any software on the market that can do much more with an ELM than just the standard J1979 stuff. Even the Jaycar tool can only do that. Tools with proprietary BA Ford capability are always $2000 or more. The closest you'll get is ScanXL - which is made my PalmerPerformance and is the evolution of PCMSCAN - but this only has Ford Specific codes from the PCM, and you have to buy the Ford specfic stuff on top of the base ScanXL software. Yeah I have so far written 2 programs, B Series Cluster Tool which is an ELM compatible Instrument Cluster tool that allows you to setup all the options via the can bus, also has functions to check speedo/tacho calibration etc.
My other program is the B Series Cluster EEPROM Tool, which allows you to edit a Cluster EEPROM file (which you would need to get from the on board EEPROM). This allows you to do alot more as in set different speedo ranges, change cluster to a High series and also change the odometer etc. Both of these are in final testing stages now. I am looking at developing at least another 2 or 3 programs, B Series PCM Tool and BEM Tool and a B Series DTC Tool. The DTC tool will be released on here when its complete. Matt

Mi Moit came to work today with his MIL light on. BF XR6T. Freaked him out a bit.
So we plugged in and pulled out the DTC's from all his modules. Thought I'd share them with yooz. I've pulled out the DTC's and converted them. What i haven't shown is the command to change the Header between modules, and to change to ISO and set the values for the RCM. The VSS is the big one - not sure if that's because of a low voltage or not. Some can be ignored - like internal temp sense and seat memory since he doesn't have them. But the pedal Box errors and the BEM horn/wiper errors scare me a bit. Hopefully they are low-voltage triggered issues, otherwise they point to potential loom problems. He's going to change the battery today, we'll reset the DTC's, and see how many come back over the weekend. Lukeyson |

Yeah, scares me a low battery can throw so many errors. VSS sounds problematic though, it's gotten from the ABS system, so I guess low voltage to it would cause ongoing issues with VSS too.
Glad you brought this thread back up.... Way back when, when I turned on the police modem all was good. it agreed with my GPS, and the speedo needle showed a few km/h more (3 to be exact). Sunday I ran the battery somewhat flat, and while trying to turn it over (before I realised it was flat), I noticed it flash 'POLICE' in the odometer area (never seen that before), and now the needle, police mode readout, and GPS all match - weird. Now what do you want me to check, to see what's possibly changed, why would the needle with it's factory implemented 'error' safety margin, now all of a sudden be correct. I'll have to double check as I got new front tyres today, see if that's had any effect.

any ideas if possible to disable ABS all together?
I'm thinking in a retrofit situation which would stop the ecu / other things complaining about the abs system missing also whats the best deal on the module and getting setup to fool around with ba can network?? |

Not that I'm aware of with the tools I have. Maybe the custom flash software that's used with the SCT (CAPA/Herrod/BPT) Tools might be able to do it. I know they can disable Smartshield. And all through this thread we talk about the ELM327. Go look it up on eBay. You should be able to get a 1.2a USB version for $50 incl shipping from China. Lukeyson |

Yes, I was aware of that as well. But curiously, the ABS module doesn't come up with any DTC's at all. It did strike me as odd that all those other modules would throw up DTC's on no VSS when the ABS Module hasn't noticed a thing. There's something else going on here. He does complain that every now and then his car starts and the speedo just doesn't work at all. On shut down and another restart it works fine. Various attempts to find the issue at his local service centre have turned up empty. He's going to let me have the car over the weekend to do some more diagnostics. Aside from dumping the guts of all his modules, I'm interested in seeing if I can pull out the snapshot data that triggered his MIL, and do some full On Demand diagnstics, especially on that ABS. I (similar to) had that, when I put HIDs into my spotlights/foggies/whatever you want to call them. When turning them on, it'd trip the ABS system, and kill the speedo display (and of course anything else that relied on the speedo data - trans limp mode etc.). Moved the ballast/igniter box further away from the wheels and the problem hasn't resurfaced. I figured the initial high voltage starter required to fire the lights caused interference with the ABS sensor causing it to trip out. So I'd be taking a close look at the ABS sensor wiring, making sure the tone ring/wheel isn't contaminated with metal filings etc.

In your case, if there was a sensor error, I would have expected the ABS to register a sensor error.
In this case, he has no errors at all on his ABS, just on all the modules that depend on the Speed that either the ABS or the PCM broadcasts on the network. The BEM relies on it to change the speed-dependend variable intermittent wipers. not sure why The HIM needs it though. Maybe to compensate for the extra air flowing through the system at speed? You're right I'd expect to see a ABS module error or two. But something to check anyway.

Hi Lukeyson,
Did you have any luck on the weekend with the diagnostics you where doing?? |

HIM may need it to control air con pump, I know it will look at engine speed, maybe also watches speed to make sure it doesnt stall the engine when engaging.
BTW I have installed a couple of new features on my tool that cycles the speedo/tacho/fuel/temp needles to allow you to calibrate them. Matt
