Hi Lukeyson,

Did you have any luck on the weekend with the diagnostics you where doing??

Yep. Got it all cleaned up. The clutch pedal switch DTC would not clear though. I had to run it through a full KEOR cycle and press the pedal and brake while turning the wheel, in order for it to clear.

We'll sit tight and see if the other modules start complaining of the VSS again. Since the ABS doesn't complain, it may be the line that connects the ABS and PCM together for VSS. I thought at first these two modules were exchanging VSS via a CAN message, but not so once I checked the wiring. I guess it's done this way so that if the ABS isn't there - like on some utes - the PCM can take the VSS signal directly from the OSS sensor on the gearbox.

WARNING!

I have been giving advice on this website to use the ELM327 products off eBay as long as they are 1.2a versions.

We've just discovered that the Chinese appear to have reverse engineered the 1.0a ELM327 chip, but are marking their circuit boards as Version 1.2a to make you think you're buying a 1.2a ELM chip.

The 1.0 ELM chip only goes up to 38400kbps but provides the basic functions you need.

The 1.2a ELM chip can go up to 115200 with Serial, and 500000 with an FTDI USB interface. It adds J1939 (CAN for Trucks and diesels) and has some extra features with ISO9141. It also has a bigger buffer.

So you can still get the cheap units off eBay, they will work, but they are not the 1.2a ELM chip versions that they make you think they are.

If I have accidentally mislead anyone who were after those features, I apologise.

its weird about that ,as my 1.0a did not allow for any preset settings but my new 1.2a does. But as I said it doesnt allow for me to change the speed at all, the seller I got it from is not very useful. He mentioned something about a jumper, so I'll take it apart soon and have a look.

Back other than the speed, it does what I need it to do. Maybe I should just buy a 1.2 smd version and solder it in place and get true 1.2

Matt

Well, I'm seriously considering buying another Scantool.

michbound has posted on here from time to time - promoting the OBDPro tool. I'd stayed away from it because the site advertised it as only being able to do 128kbps.

But it turns out the tool can now do 1.25Mbps - which is more than enough to capture the 500kbps CANBus on the Aussie Fords at full bitrate. It is alsot ELM327 command compatible so will work with all the ELM327 software out there.

It also appears that they have an excellent upgrade policy. At the moment this involves shipping back your unit and getting it upgraded for just the cost of them shipping the unit to you. But they are working on a software-upgrade process as well.

In US dollars it's about the same as the OBD2AllInOne that I originally purchased at the start of the thread - but with the US currency falling faster than the price of oil is rising, a favourable exchange rate will see it cost me MUCH less money this time around.

I'm yet to make a final decision, but if I do buy, it will likely be this unit, and I'll post some comments if there's interest.

I'm thinking of getting a bluetooth OBD2 interface, so I can interface with my smartphone.

Seems limited options.

blueOBD says CAN support in Mar07 (page last updated back then too).

OBDKey = uber $ (90GBP)

One of these:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Bluetoot ... 0255575401

Looks like it'll be easy enough to hard wire it into the loom just behind the fusebox.

Going to try both the 'MicroOBD' and 'OBDGauges' software for my Windows Mobile equipped phone.

On a side note, I read somewhere that the ELM 1.3 is scheduled for release in August 2008.

Hi all,
wish I had discovered this site a year ago.
good stuff, just spent the arvo reading 18 pages.
have any of you seen this?
http://www.kvaser.com/
http://www.kvaser.com/prod/hardware/leaf_light.htm $350
higher in price than some of the other stuff, but the software
allows more diagnostic control.

I guess it would be OK. It's fast and light, but it's CAN Only. It does say it's J2534 which is a good thing.

Kvaser are a pretty big player. Just look at all the supported apps!

But with only a single protocol, I'd be thinking that a Mongoose is still a better value for money J2534 tool for domestic enthusiasts/backyard mechanics with a choice of 2 protocols for just under $300.

Beyond that, an EEPod LLC which does all OBD2 protocols AND programmable pin voltage via J2534 seems like even better value at $500USD (but things like the OBD2 cable are extra.)

Hi Luke
yeah, agree with you on that.
I have used the canking software for other purposes
and it handled message formating and filtering.

Have you looked any further in/at the broadcast messages,
or logged a drive?

Yep. We have a fair bit of data on that. There's a still a lot of gaps in our knowledge though. And the BF/SY has additional messages again that I haven't even started on, especially with the ZF tranny.
