Ok firstly what is the difference between the BEM, and the ECU?
Secondly if I want to upgrade to a Fairmont BEM or XR ECU how do I do it? |

bem is body electribs module or somethin.. pretty sure it interfaces with stuff like climate/cruise control etc etc..

someone correct me if im wrong....
the ECU controls engine critical functions and calculations, it takes in information from your cars sensors o2, temperature air/fuel mix etc and adjusts the functionality of the engine accordingly the BEM controls electronical functions such as lighting, cruise control, central locking etc etc, basically to make your life easier and more comfortable whilst driving changing them over would probably be a matter of pulling one out, and changing the wires over, however lower and higher series BEM's would most likely have different features, and therefore different wiring configurations

as above, the ECU you could swap.. the BEM however Id be careful with. IIRC they interface with smartlock to compare codes. Im sure they can relearn, but just be careful.
To replace the ECU, get the same model car ECU, for example, if you have an EF, get an EF xr6 ecu. Not EL, plugs are different, as is the ignition system. After you have got it, remove the passenger side kick panel, loosen the 10 mil bolt on top of the loom on top of the ecu, after you unscrew it from the chasis, and then just plug in the new one, and screw that 10mil back on. Done. Make sure you disconnect the battery before you do this, voltage spikes could kill your new ECU. Cheers

There's a doco in the doco section all about the BEM AND how to upgrade it to a higher spec one AND how to start a car that is immobilised due to the BEM being replaced..... not due to the car being broken into. The doco is for the EF I believe and is under "upgrading Smartlock" |

IIRC, it is "clipped"", so you pull the two tabs together, and pull it out, and then unplug it. Its above your left knee if you're sitting in the drivers seat.
As for if it would work...Im not sure, But I don't see a reason for it not working... only one way to find out. Unless you are only thinking of buying one. Cheers

BEM (body control module) controls such things as intermittant wipers, door locks, interior lamp fade, wipers and stuff like that.
BEM also controls the smartlock function and so comunicates to the ECU (engine control unit) to tell it if the engine is allowed to start. BEM does not control cruise function (atleast in EF/EL) as the cruise control module contains its own processor (and therefore logic). The cruise control module gets inputs from the cruise switches, brake peddle and data/speed wire (from the cluster) and gives outputs to the cluster cruise lamp and servo motor (integrated within cruise module) which then controls the throttle. As mentioned previously, a doc exist which clearly specify the functions, connectors and wire colors of the various BEM if EF/EL's. Cheers, Itchione |

Ok is it really really accesible or is it behind a panel? It sounds stupid but I think I may know what it is but need confirmation. |

the green looking things. Its not behind a panel, but you will have to look up from underneath, and behind the dash. You'll see it, the clip is black IIRC, and the the BEM is green.

The BEM may not be green, depends on the spec of the car. If it is green, then that is already a high series, and as such upgrading to a DL LTD will provide no further functions. And for info, the plugs on the EF are different ot those on the EL/DL series. The easisest way to get at it is to remove the dash surround and to the left of the cluster is a pair of plugs. Either side of these plugs are 2 phillips head screws, these need to be removed and then the BEM is pulled out from under the dash near the break/clutch pedal depending on auto or manual tranny
