yep, disconnect the battery negative (or positive depending on if your left handed or right handed), and then remove the kickpanel, unscrew the bracket, and then there's a 10mm bolt on top, keep unscrewing until the connector comes off, then plug the new one in, screw in, and put everything back, connect the battery back up, and done.
As Disco Frank said, at first it'll run a bit rough while it learns all its adaptive parameters, and perhaps even stall sometimes, but its never happened to me. The ECU won't have to relearn the BEM though...thats smartlock you're thinking of Disco Frank, and ECU changes don't apply. May I also ask XR6 Wagon, why are you changing the ECU? Cheers

im changing the ecu cause my current one has been in it since '94 and is seriously playing up causing the engine to stall when i'm in nutral., and its just not going as it should.

Mike_EA - no, the car will crank.. and keep cranking, and keep cranking, you'll have no spark, and no fuel, simple as that. Easy enough checked, on your ECU, (much easier with analogue MM, or a scope), connect the analogue meter to pin36, and ground, now you should see something resembling a tacho signal, basically a square 12V, or on your multimeter, bouncing up from 0V to 12V and back.. if you get this, then ECU is fine. As far ask spark is concerned.
If you don't disconnect the battery, basically what happens is when you bring the terminals close together (as most of you would know) you get a spark if the battery is connected. This is caused by a build up of electricity, as it takes 30,000V of electricity to jump 1cm of air (from memory)... so if your holding the pin 50mm away from the ECU pin, and you suddnely get 15,000V through it, well... it'll die. XR6 Wagon - You'll find that the ECU doesn't need changing, if you're having idle issues, try cleaning the ISC (Idle Speed controller - ontop of your throttle body, with two wires going to it, and 2x10mm bolts holding it in). The little butterfly inside that allows air to bypass the throttle body gets stuck or jammed in crap, cleaning it might help, try carby cleaner or something similar, soak it in it. Also, while doing that, try resetting the ECU if you think that its learnt crap over the last 12 years. Im sure its been reset before, but you know what I mean. If you already bought the other ECU, did you buy also a tickford ECU? Cheers

i have a quickie question, which i'm sure has been asked.
What is the added benifits of changing a dead stocko EF ECU with a XR6 one? Please

more agressive spark maps, in the manuals no speed limiter (autos still limited), in the autos firmer shift points.. Really not worth it if you ask me, but thats just my opinion.
Cheers

- mike i've changed mine a few times without disconnecting the battery and mine is fine its like the bloody gregories manual, they love telling you to disconnect the battery: To change a wheel: 1. disconect the negative battery terminal
