I'm not sure which area to put this thread

My AU3 XR8 drives really nicely, no problems, no ecu/trans codes. But when I put the cruise control on, it surges badly, even on flat road. It's like the cruise control is making throttle adjustments that are way too much to correct the slight overspeed or underspeed. So the car is either noticably accelerating, or noticably decelerating, rather than just cruising. I can cruise on the same stretch of road using my right foot to control speed, and everything is fine. So it is the cruise control unit or an input that is dodgy.

Can anyone shed any light on the cause or any tests that might help pinpoint the cause?

try testing cruise cancel and stop lights - check all stop lights work-
cancel switch on master cylinder -bridge connections with a piece of wire and test BUT be ready to turn Off with main switch as the cruise won't cancel with this circuit bridged-
does speedo work correctly?

If it's a manual, it should have a clutch switch, which is normally closed with foot off the pedal.
If the switch was faulty, cruise would switch on, but not engage.

Don't forget to check your cable connections, and the plastic retainer that goes over the cable drum on the CC unit is clicked in properly.

I replaced the controller with one from an AU2 XR8 and it now works perfectly.

Turns out the old controller was from an EF V8 (1994 p/n). Looks identical, plugs in the same, bolts in the same, has the same cable hookup. Maybe it was incompatible electrically???

They are different - The AU Series Cruise Control talks to the PCM, telling it how to hold gear strategy etc. Its a very simply signal, but the E Series doesnt use this.

Its also used to allow the Auto's to run a different Shift Map so they dont change gears all the time.

Did you notice if your Dash light worked correctly? - It shouldnt have

Dash appeared to run correctly, both in "dash mode" and "diagnostic mode". No ecu or any other fault codes either. What were you expecting would not work correctly?

AU Falcon signals the ECU for its status using a PWM signal (On, Set, Off). The ECU Uses DOL to set the cluster lights.

The E Series Cruise directly interacts with the Dash and directly sets the indicators
