G'day

I adjusted the basic idle on my LTD DA 1989, 340,000 on the clock, when I checked the TPS voltage there was no voltage at all; ignition on engine stopped and engine running. I opened the throttle slowly to full open with engine stopped and ignition on, nothing. I checked the fault codes expecting to have code 23 for TPS, but got code 23 MAP sensor, engine stopped and engine running. Idle is very smooth now.

Can anyone make sense of this?

How bad is to drive her as it is?

Thank you for reading.

what wires were you testing between?
what did you use to probe the wire with?

yes...
does the orange wire have 5v?

sometime you need to move the probe wire around a little to get contact..

G'day

Well. I replaced the TPS, a dog of a job on this model, the voltage on the orange wire is just above 5V and the green wire has 0.98V when I earth the multimeter to the manifold, when I test on the black wire there is nothing, no voltage.

My question now is: Would it be a dry solder on the SB of the ECU? Swollen or leaking Caps? Can someone offer a suggestion before I open the ECU? Would the map sensor have anything to do with that black wire not earthed in the ECU?

Please, throw me a bone.

Thank you

the black wire is signal earth, its shared with all the other sensors, air temp, water temp, map sensor ect... so it could be just a break in the wire??

Thanks mate.

It would be very hard to run/ replace that wire from the ECU to the TPS, I guess. :?: How do I test it? Do I need it?

TROYMAN, you are right. There are at least 4 sensors that connect to pin 46 in the ECU. Ny question now is: can I hot wire the black, ground, wire to get the all the sensors grounded? or should I check pin 46 on the ECU?

Thanks for reading.

best to check pin 46 first, you can also check the sensors voltage at the ecu end aswell..

Nah, don't do that - it's signal ground, not chassis ground. Mind you, you can jumper pin 46 to chassis, and check TPS and MAP signal earth continuity to chassis - JUST for testing, with ECU unplugged.
This is the twin TPS setup too ??? - Swap engine and trans TPS plugs, and see what happens - if engine TPS was dodgy, the trans would be playing up on plug swapping.

Should have some local forum members who can loan an ECU and MAP sensor for testing ??

6 cyl gear is pretty common.

Thanks guys. I have some work to do. I'll keep you posted whatever happens.

G'day

After trying to find the fault and fix it I took her to the auto electrician. Two and a half weeks and $500.00 after it's like new engine. The faulty wire was the least of the problems. They cleaned injectors and replaced fuel filters, including the one on the fuel pump, and a bad fuel hose on the fuel pump and new thermostat. The engine even lost the lifter clicking noise and runs cooler now. I'm very happy with the job done.

Thanks for your help guys
